TRIDENT-UK YORKSHIRE AND HUMBERSIDE YOUTH TRAVELLERS' SERIES

The Trident-sponsored Yorkshire and Humberside Youth Travellers' Series is now all over bar the shouting. 17 year-old Phil Bishop from Sheffield sailing a Laser secured his name on the Martin Pratt Memorial Shield with one event remaining. His 3rd, 2nd and 1st on the last day of June make him unassailable.

Thirty-three young sailors assembled at Halifax SC to be greeted by a solid force five. Many changed down a rig or reefed and some opted to sit out the first race in the hope that the wind would moderate. It didn't.

Twenty-two starters became seventeen finishers. Skylar Paulich dominated race 1 with the only serious challenge coming from Bishop and the Laser 2000 of Ben Lister and Ceri Shave which snatched second place on adjusted time. Also lurking in the background was Matt Richardson in his Topper who came a creditable fourth. The wind increased but after some swapping of larger boats for smaller ones not being sailed, twenty four intrepid sailors made it to the start. This race was a contest for who capsized the least. Tim Vick's Fireball stretched a huge lead at one stage but succumbed to the Force 7 gusts allowing Lister and Shave to take the gun followed by Bishop and Alex Good and Nikki Smith in their RS200. By Race 3 the wind had taken its toll and only fourteen started, anxious to gain valuable series points. With rescue stretched to its limit OOD Chris Holden prudently kept the race short. Georgie Hill's Laser 4.7 and Bishop's Laser full rig made excellent pin-end starts and only six seconds separated them on adjusted time at the end This gave Bishop his first win of the day and the overall event on a tie-break from Lister and Shave.
