Enterprise Open Meeting at Newbiggin by the Sea Sailing Club

by Arnold MacDonald 20 Jun 2001 09:44 BST

Newbiggin Sailing club held their Enterprise 'Cock of the North' Open Meeting over the weekend 16th / 17th June 2001. The conditions were interesting with a overcast and rainy day on Saturday and a North Easterly 5-6 and on Sunday a sunny day with Northerly 6-7 gusting 8. Both days were provided with a 3 metre swell. There was lots of activity on in and under the water over the week-end.

A triangular course was set with the Start and Windward Marks just inside the bay and the Gybe mark outside amongst the surf.

16 boats competed in the event from as far afield as Hallamshire, Sheffield and Tynemouth.

Racing on Saturday started at 2.30pm with Neal Piper and Ian Brown taking and maintaining the lead from start to finish closely followed by Ian Henery and Amy Fayers in second place and Lawrence Young and Gillian Taylor in third place. First capsize of the day occurred on the second beat when David Storey jumped ship (fell out of the back) but soon righted the boat and completed race one.

On Sunday morning we came down to sunny skies and a northerly 6-7 with a 3 metre swell. Matt and Emma Jenkins had a good start and led from start to finish followed by Peter Middlemiss and Dorothy Cragg with third place going to Tim Sadler and Richard Sault. As Arnold Mac Donald and Trevor Kirby were bearing off after rounding the windward mark on the first beat their boom snapped result-ing in a spectacular capsize.

Conditions in the second race remained similar to the first race but with an increase in wind strength toa force 6-7 gusting 8. Neal Piper and Barry McNichol led from the start closely followed by Tim Sadler and Richard Sault in second place and Martin Honner and Simon Haighton in third place. As expected there was a lot of swimming at the gybe mark.

A good sail was had by all, with the bonus of a good swim for most, thanks to all competitors and those who helped on the day to make this a splendid weekend.
