Royal Mersey Yacht Club Regatta Overall

by Tony Marston 12 Jun 2001 13:42 BST

9th June 2001

It was pay back time for Royal Mersey Yacht Club on Saturday, to make up for losing last year's regatta to adverse weather. They were rewarded with good sailing conditions this year. Twelve classes of boat, ranging from Sigmas to GPs competed in a westerly force 3 to 4 breeze with the Juniors competing on West Kirby lake. The host club sported the largest fleet, the Mylne; Chris Kay sailing Meridian took line honours.

Royal Mersey Regatta is the first of a series of six regattas making up the Wirral Regatta Series. Eleven classes are sponsored (see results) with a £250 First Prize for the winner of the series for the sponsored classes.

Many of last year's class series winners are still in their winning ways this year including Mike Hartley in the Falcons', Will Thomson : Dart 18s' and Richard Booth : WK Stars.

There was keen competition in the Optimist fleet with Harry Stewart clinching an overall win with a first and second. The Cadets were the most competitive class in the handicap; Greg Moore emerged the winner.
