Topper Open Meeting at Avon Sailing Club

by Fi Lucas 10 Jun 2001 23:22 BST

9th June 2001

On Saturday 9th June 25 Toppers descended on Avon S.C. for what was in fact the first of the South West Traveller Series. The first race was sailed in light winds and last years winner Andy Harding took an early lead, but local knowledge enabled Alastair Lucas to hold 2nd place for most of the race before being overhauled by Ros Davies and Nathan Batchelor.

The second race started in fresher winds but had to be abandoned when the rain came killing the wind.Fortunately the wind reappeared in time for a restart with Harding and Davies again showing consistant form with Will Edwards from British Steel 3rd. Tim Simon from Avon was 4th.

The final race was again won by Harding, followed by Batchelor and Davies. An enjoyable day was had by all with some very close mid fleet racing.
