The Race - Team Legato rounds Cape Horn
by Mireille Vatine 11 Mar 2001 17:36 GMT
Seventh heaven aboard Team Legato. Just as dawn broke way down there in Tierra del Fuego, visibility permitting, the crew of the British boat should have been able to make out 12 miles abeam of their port hull, that famous rock that has crystallised a thousand dreams among generations of mariners. Having been caught up by the depression that he was trying to outpace, Tony Bullimore finally rounded the Horn early this morning and should eventually be able to seek shelter just like Warta-Polpharma did last week when weather conditions became Dantesque for her too.
The safety boat Watcher is on station. Her mission in the Southern Ocean is over, she is just 85 miles astern of the last boat in The Race and will also soon be starting her long ascent up the Atlantic.
Warta-Polpharma is struggling. Roman Paszke and his crew are having a veritable lesson in patience. Still sailing in a very rough seaway, the boat cannot carry much sail, so is not making much progress, and her heading isn't ideal either. The Poles have no other choice but to be patient and try and find mile after mile a more favourable passage by tracking away from the Brazilian coast and putting in some more easting. A lesson in patience and a lesson for the future said Dariusz Drapella: "these big boats don't like sailing in choppy seas", and it would seem as though that is exactly what they have got at the moment, with waves forming in all directions in the squalls.
Team Adventure is romping on. 22 knots on starboard tack, just off Recife in Brazil, Cam Lewis and his boys are speeding towards the Equator, only 590 miles away. The American catamaran is now 3800 miles from Marseilles where her two sister ships are waiting under the watchful eye of the Good Mother. The cathedral of 'Notre Dame de la Garde' watches over Marseilles and all those who place their faith in her, you have to climb up the hill yourself to see the vows you hold in your heart realised.
