The Fireball fleet's final event of the season lived up to expectations at Rutland Sailing Club, attracting an outstanding entry of 22 boats and showcasing some of the very best British Fireball talent.

With almost every crew from the UK's top echelon represented, including the majority of the current top 20 in the world rankings, the quality of competition was exceptionally high and set the stage for a memorable season finale.

Day One: Survival of the Fittest

Saturday's conditions delivered exactly what had been forecast and then some. Competitors faced a day that seemed to contain a little bit of everything, with challenging and ever-changing conditions ensuring that no one enjoyed an easy ride around the racecourse.

The racing was absolute carnage from start to finish. Capsizes were plentiful, gear failures were widespread, and simply surviving the day proved to be the biggest challenge for many crews. One of the standout moments came when Georgia Booth and Ollie Davenport suffered a dramatic rudder failure on the approach to the finish line. Displaying remarkable determination and boat handling, they managed to sail across the line and complete the race without a rudder.

Despite the demanding conditions, the race committee did a fantastic job. With shifting winds and the inevitable challenges of mark laying, they kept the programme moving and ensured competitors completed a full day's racing.

Through all the chaos, one team stood head and shoulders above the rest. Current World Champions DJ Edwards and Vyv Townend produced a display of complete dominance, consistently finding another gear when it mattered. The highlight of their day came in the final race when they opted for a bold port-tack flyer off the start line. By the time the fleet reached the windward mark they had established a staggering lead of around 30 boat lengths, leaving the rest of the fleet to battle amongst themselves for the remaining places.

Day Two: Lighter Winds, Tight Racing

Sunday brought a much lighter forecast and, for once, the meteorologists got it right. While the conditions were significantly gentler than the previous day, there was still sufficient breeze across the course to allow racing to get underway on time and complete a further three good races.

The lighter airs produced some extremely close racing throughout the fleet. Although DJ Edwards and Vyv Townend once again demonstrated their class, they did not have things all their own way on the final day.

Georgia Booth took a well-deserved race win in the middle race of the day, while Richard Pepperdine and Peter Grey rounded off the championship in style by taking victory in the final race. With several crews challenging at the front, the racing remained competitive right to the end and provided a fitting conclusion to an excellent championship.

A Fantastic Finale

Overall, the Rutland Sailing Club End of Season Championship proved to be a fantastic event and a superb way to close out another successful Fireball season. Thanks must go to the race management team, volunteers and competitors who helped make the event such a success.

We now look forward to seeing everyone again at the opening event of next season, the Thomas Castle Aviation Heritage Trophy at Draycote Water, where another year of Fireball racing gets underway.
