From Legacy to the Next Generation: Catamaran Sailors Receive Barranjoey Pins

Two generations of Australian catamaran sailors were celebrated at this year's State Awards, with Greg Cann, Greg Goodall, Archie Gargett and Sarah Hoffman recognised with prestigious Barranjoey Pins.

Established in 2018 as part of the Australian Sailing Team Alumni Program, the Barranjoey Pin celebrates the legacy of Australian Olympic and Paralympic sailing. Each uniquely numbered pin recognises athletes who achieved the Australian Sailing Team standard or recorded a top-10 finish at an Olympic-class World Championship, Olympic or Paralympic Games before 2006. Importantly, each pin is presented by an existing recipient, creating a tangible connection between generations of sailors.

At the Victorian State Sailing Awards, Greg Cann (#109) and Greg Goodall (#250) received their pins from Australian catamaran legend Glenn Ashby (#166).

Cann was one of Victoria's leading catamaran sailors of his generation, winning the Australian Paper Tiger Championship in 1987 and the 1989 Interdominion Championship before turning his attention to the Olympic Tornado class. In 1989, Cann and Allan Goodall (#108) won bronze at the Tornado World Championships in Houston.

Goodall's sailing story began at Bendigo Yacht Club before he went on to become a two-time A-Class World Champion, eight-time Australian Champion and 24-time State Champion. In 1991, he represented Australia alongside his brother Allan at the Tornado World Championships in Cagliari, Italy, finishing an outstanding seventh in the Olympic class.

The recognition holds particular significance following Allan's passing earlier this year. Together, the brothers helped shape an important chapter in Australian multihull sailing, with Greg continuing that contribution across multiple roles as a sailor, designer, boatbuilder, sailmaker, coach and mentor.

Now, the next generation is beginning to write its own chapter.

Archie Gargett and Sarah Hoffman received Barranjoey Pins #252 and #253 at the NSW State Sailing Awards from 2012 Olympic silver medallist and Australian Sailing board member Olivia Price (#183), following their breakthrough 2026 season in the Olympic Nacra 17 class.

The pair recorded a career-best fourth at the 2026 Nacra 17 World Championships in Quiberon, France, climbing from ninth to fourth on the final day after securing first and second-place finishes in the two final races. They followed that performance with eighth at the Nacra 17 European Championships in Germany and ninth at the San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta in Los Angeles as they continue their pursuit of LA2028.

From the Tornado to the Nacra 17, the boats and generations may have changed, but the pursuit of excellence remains. The Barranjoey Pin provides a tangible link between those who helped build Australia's high-performance sailing legacy and those now carrying it forward.
