Aldeburgh Yacht Club hosted another fantastic Summer Regatta (23 - 28 August), with Flying Fifteens contesting morning and afternoon series across the week. We were delighted to welcome two visiting boats — Justin Waples of RCYC and Greg Wells of HISC.

Sixteen boats in total participated in six morning races, with the top six going into the medal race on the final afternoon. We also had a great turnout for the afternoon series which saw several younger FF sailors snapping at the heels of more seasoned racers.

Great weather and fair winds made for exciting sailing both up and down river, taking in the full sweep of the Alde's beautiful scenery. Racing was tightly contested throughout, with the river's bends, eddies and moored boats producing constant place-changing during individual races as well as over the series.

The atmosphere was good-natured throughout, with help and advice always on offer to newer sailors whilst spare parts and know how were shared for emergency repairs.

Justin Waples' crown from last year was lifted by Will Fennell, who took three race wins and the Medal Race itself. That decider was sailed on the Friday afternoon in front of a packed clubhouse terrace: a fresh 20-knot breeze straight up the river made for three thrilling laps of windward-leewards between the clubhouse line and the Martello Tower.

The socials matched the racing. Regatta opening drinks on the terrace with a live band kicked things off after racing finished on the first day. This was followed by a boisterous competitors' dinner on the Wednesday night and the week closed with the AYC Regatta Ball where three bands ensured the dancing kept going into the early hours.

Visitors always get a warm welcome at AYC, and next year we're arranging for some launching trollies to be lent out to visiting boats — first come, first served, so book early! Dates are already set for next year's FF Open Meeting (8-9 May) and AYC Spring Regatta (29-30 May). We look forward to welcoming you.

Regatta Morning Series podium:

1. Will Fennel (AYC)
2. Ian Robson (AYC)
3. Justin Waples (RCYC)
