With just a week remaining before the start of the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship, the pressure is building and the pace of preparation is accelerating on every front.
For the teams, the final countdown brings a familiar series of questions: Is the boat ready? Are the sails ready? Has every detail been checked, tuned and tested? World Championship preparation reaches far beyond assembling the right crew. Equipment, measurement requirements, travel logistics and countless last-minute decisions must all come together before the first warning signal.
The same intensity is unfolding ashore.
Hosted by Little Traverse Yacht Club (LTYC) in conjunction with the International Melges 24 Class Association (IM24CA) and the US Melges 24 Class Association (USM24CA), the 2026 Worlds will bring an international fleet to Harbor Springs September 19-26. Behind the racing stands an extensive network of yacht club members, volunteers, community partners, local businesses and event sponsors working together to welcome the fleet and deliver a championship worthy of the occasion.
It takes a village, and Harbor Springs is answering the call.
Central to that effort is the Great Lakes Sports Commission, whose significant support has helped make the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship possible. Its involvement reflects the championship's value not only as an international sailing competition, but also as an opportunity to showcase Northern Michigan, strengthen the region's connection to the Great Lakes and welcome sailors and supporters to Harbor Springs.
From preparing measurement areas, dockage and launching operations to finalizing schedules, competitor briefings, social gatherings and shoreside hospitality, the number of moving parts is considerable. Each element requires careful planning, close coordination and people willing to contribute their time and expertise.
"Little Traverse Yacht Club is excited and ready to welcome the Melges 24 Class to Harbor Springs," said Regatta Chair Tommy Meier. "The dedication shown by our club members and event volunteers has been tremendous. With just over a week remaining, the final pieces are falling into place, and we are ready to bring the fleet together for an exceptional World Championship."
A natural home for a world championship
For LTYC, the connection is deeply rooted. Sailing is not simply an activity at the club; it is part of its identity. Generations of members have raced, cruised and gathered along the shores of Little Traverse Bay, building a culture shaped by competition, camaraderie, family and a lasting appreciation for time spent on the water.
That spirit extends throughout Harbor Springs. Its protected waterfront, maritime heritage and enduring relationship with Lake Michigan make it a natural home for the Melges 24 World Championship-an event representing a class with its own rich history, international legacy and generations of sailors drawn to high-performance one-design racing.
For one week, those two traditions will converge on Little Traverse Bay.
On the water, the championship will test some of the sailing world's most accomplished professional and Corinthian teams. At week's end, competitors, organizers, volunteers and supporters will gather at Nub's Nob for the closing ceremony and final celebration. There, the 2026 Melges 24 Open and Corinthian World Champions will be crowned, and several other honors will recognize the breadth and future of the fleet. In particular, the newly introduced Meier Trophy, awarded to the highest-finishing female helmsperson, and the Next Gen Trophy presented by Zerogradinord, celebrating the fleet's emerging young talent.
A community wide effort
Irish Boat Shop will serve as an important operational hub for the regatta, supporting measurement, dockage, launching and the considerable movement of boats, equipment and people required to keep the event running efficiently. Its waterfront presence and longstanding connection to boating in Northern Michigan make it an essential partner in transforming months of preparation into a fully functioning World Championship base.
Throughout the week, LTYC will become the center of shoreside activity, hosting competitor briefings, gatherings with club members, crew barbecues and other social events designed to bring sailors, volunteers, families and supporters together beyond the racecourse.
The shoreside experience will also carry the character of Harbor Springs into the event. Local artist Trisha Witty, selected as the Official Artist of the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship, has created Twenty-Four Feet of Fury, an original oil painting inspired by the speed and energy of the fleet on Little Traverse Bay. The artwork will appear on event T-shirts, posters and other commemorative merchandise, while the original painting and signed, numbered limited-edition prints will provide a lasting connection between the championship and its host community.
Gill Marine, the Official Technical Apparel Partner of the event, will also be present with championship gear as activity builds throughout the venue.
The World Championship will also serve as the fifth and final stage of the 2026 Quantum Sails Great Lakes Cup, bringing the regional series to its conclusion on one of Northern Michigan's most celebrated sailing venues.
Supported with purpose
An event of this scale does not come together through one organization, business or individual. It requires a shared sense of purpose, and the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship has received meaningful support from across the region and throughout the sailing community.
In addition to the Great Lakes Sports Commission, additional event support comes from Arntson Marine, Running Water, Quantum Sails, Irish Boat Shop, City of Harbor Springs, Nub's Nob, Lulu's Cottage, Graceful Pathway, Fabiano Brothers, Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau, Little Traverse Yacht Club Corinthian Foundation and Melges Performance Sailboats, along with many other local businesses, organizations and individuals contributing to the championship.
Their contributions take many forms, from direct financial support and equipment to facilities, services, hospitality and the practical resources required to stage an international regatta such as the Melges 24 Worlds. Together with the volunteers investing countless hours behind the scenes, these partners form the larger crew carrying the championship toward opening day.
Soon, the measurement areas will open. Boats will arrive. Masts will rise above the harbor. Competitors will gather at Little Traverse Yacht Club, and months of planning will give way to a week of the most sensational Melges 24 racing on Little Traverse Bay.
The world is coming to Harbor Springs, and the village is ready to welcome it.
