It is a truly international Melges 24 weekend. While Europe's leading teams are arriving in Tønsberg, Norway, for next week's Melges 24 European Championship, the spotlight in North America turns to Little Traverse Bay, where racing begins today at the 2026 Melges 24 Pre-Worlds Regatta.

Serving as the final rehearsal before the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship, to be held September 19-26 in Harbor Springs, the two-day regatta marks the beginning of the decisive final stretch on the road to one of one-design sailing's most coveted titles.

If the 2026 Melges 24 U.S. National Championship revealed anything, it is that there is no clear favourite for the Melges Performance Sailboats Trophy. Across three fiercely contested days on Grand Traverse Bay earlier this month, a deep collection of evenly matched teams traded places, played the pressure, and demonstrated what it takes to contend at the highest level. Nearly a dozen boats showed the pace and consistency to win races, lead the fleet and challenge for a major championship title.

Now, the question is no longer whether the fleet is ready. It is which team will rise to the occasion.

Those answers begin to emerge today as competitors take to Little Traverse Bay for the Pre-Worlds Regatta, hosted by Little Traverse Yacht Club (LTYC) as the fourth of five events in the 2026 Quantum Sails Great Lakes Cup Series.

Far more than a tune-up, the two-day regatta brings competitors, race officials, organizers and local marine partners into full operational rhythm ahead of September's World Championship.

For the sailors, it is the first real opportunity to experience the championship racecourse under race conditions, measure boat speed against many of their principal rivals, fine-tune crew work and begin unlocking the tactical nuances of Little Traverse Bay - a venue capable of rewarding patience, precision and smart decision-making in equal measure.

For LTYC's race management team, volunteers and event partners, the weekend provides an invaluable full-scale rehearsal. From launching operations and dock management to race committee procedures, technical support and waterfront logistics, every aspect of the championship operation is now being put into practice before the international fleet returns in three weeks' time. Throughout Harbor Springs, the championship atmosphere has arrived.

This weekend's fleet also welcomes several high-powered programs that did not compete at the U.S. Nationals, adding even greater depth to what is already shaping up to be one of the strongest Melges 24 World Championship fields in recent years.

Ten-time Melges 24 U.S. National Champion and 2013 World Champion Brian Porter returns with Full Throttle, one of the most successful programs in Class history. Porter arrives with decades of championship experience, an unmatched record of success, and an extraordinary ability to perform under pressure.

Joining Porter will be key members of his 2013 World Championship-winning crew, including sons RJ and Bri Porter, together with Matt Woodworth.

"I'm very excited," said Porter. "I really haven't sailed much all summer, so now we've got Pre-Worlds, E-Boat Nationals and then the Worlds. I'm getting a lot of time in here, and hopefully we can get our rhythm down. To see 45 boats coming to Harbor Springs is fantastic. The Melges 24 is such a great boat and so much fun, no matter where you are in the fleet."

Another major return comes from Chelsea Simms, who helms Straightarrow after finishing ninth overall at the 2024 World Championship in San Francisco. Following nearly two years away from Melges 24 competition, Simms returns with proven world-class pace and an accomplished crew that includes USM24CA Midwest District Governor George Peet, together with Skip Dieball and Dan Kaseler.

Simms is one of several accomplished women helming campaigns expected to compete in Harbor Springs this September - a reflection of the increasingly competitive and diverse talent at the front of today's Melges 24 fleet. As the U.S. Nationals recently demonstrated, women helms are not simply participating in the championship conversation - they are helping define it.

Equally formidable is Anthony Kotoun's Wahgwan. Following a podium finish at the 2025 U.S. Nationals and sixth overall at the 2024 World Championship, Kotoun arrives with a crew combining extensive international experience and some of the brightest young talent in American sailing.

Among them is Riley Gibbs, recently selected as one of the first six sailors for ARC Team USA's campaign for the 38th America's Cup in Naples. A Tokyo Olympian, former U.S. SailGP Team member and veteran of the 2024 America's Cup cycle with American Magic, Gibbs brings elite-level foiling, speed and technical expertise to the program.

For the World Championship itself, Gibbs will be replaced aboard Wahgwan by Stu McNay - a five-time Olympian, 2015 European Champion in the 470 and 2022 505 World Champion. McNay also helmed Embarr to victory at the 2016 Melges 24 World Championship, adding yet another world champion to an already remarkable crew.

Joining Kotoun are Jordan and Grant Janov, currently campaigning toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the 49er, together with Franny Schulte, completing one of the deepest line-ups in the fleet.

The arrival of Porter, Simms, Kotoun and several other championship-calibre teams only reinforces the lesson delivered at the U.S. Nationals: the 2026 World Championship will not be won by one overwhelming favourite. Success will belong to the team capable of adapting fastest, making the fewest mistakes and maintaining consistency throughout an exceptionally competitive week of racing.

While the World Championship remains three weeks away, another important season-long contest also enters its decisive phase this weekend.

The Pre-Worlds Regatta represents the penultimate stop of the Quantum Sails Great Lakes Cup, now in its sixth consecutive season. The regional series has become an important cornerstone of Melges 24 racing in North America, continuing to strengthen participation while providing owners and teams with a structured pathway of high-quality competition.

The 2026 Great Lakes Cup champion will ultimately be crowned during the World Championship, making every race sailed this weekend significant, not only as championship preparation, but also in the pursuit of valuable series points before the finale.

Quantum Sails' continued commitment has helped establish the Great Lakes Cup as one of the Class' strongest regional circuits, and its support extends well beyond the racecourse as a major partner of the Melges 24 community.

Following Friday's official practice racing, up to five championship races are scheduled across Saturday and Sunday on Little Traverse Bay.

Today, preparation gives way to competition.

The first starting signal of the Pre-Worlds Regatta launches the final rehearsal before the world's best return to Harbor Springs in September. Over the next two days, the fleet will gain its clearest indication yet of which teams have found the speed, consistency and confidence required to challenge for the Melges Performance Sailboats Trophy when the 2026 Melges 24 World Championship begins on September 19.

The road to Harbor Springs has reached its decisive phase.
