Topper sailors of all ages experienced an unforgettable day on the River Dart on Friday. Setting off from Dittisham Sailing Club under the watchful eye of Arthur Marshall, the sailors navigated their way up the river, skillfully zigzagging through fluctuating winds to reach a bend just above Stoke Gabriel.
After securing their boats to a buoy, they were whisked away by RIB to the former home of Topper designer Ian Proctor. There, the Proctor family warmly welcomed everyone with a delicious BBQ lunch. Ian's son, Roger, shared a fascinating overview of the boat's legacy, showcased the beautifully hand drawn original plans and provided a rare glimpse into the rich history of the Topper sailboat.
Upon reuniting with their boats, the junior sailors embraced camaraderie through fun, muddy games on the foreshore. The sail back down the river, guided by the tide, brought the group home to Dittisham Sailing Club. The Topper, celebrated as the "friendly class," not only captivates a vibrant junior community but also inspires sailors of all ages, creating cherished memories of adventure on the water.
