Border Counties Midweek Series at Llyn Brenig Sailing Club

by Andy Davey & Andrew Roberts 19 Aug 06:57 BST 11 August 2026

Tuesday 11th August saw 20 visiting sailors arrive at the club to compete in the Border Counties Traveller series. Clubs represented were Bala, Budworth, Elton, Nantwich, Port Dinorwic, Scammonden, Shotwick, Shropshire SC, Winsford Flash, as well as Llyn Brenig. Two local sailors represented the home club - Jac Morley Moore and Ieuan Kelly.

Boats ranged from RS100s and a D-Zero at one end, to ILCA 4's and a Topper at the other end of the Portsmouth Yardstick scale. The biggest fleet was a group of six Streakers. Most boats were single handers, but there were two double handed boats, an RS200 and a Miracle.

For once, we enjoyed the Costa del Brenig with a 7-9 knot Southerly breeze with some stronger gusts. The morning course was flag and 10 to 9, E, D and back through the gate between the pontoon and 10, with the race win being taken by Andy Todd in his RS100 followed closely by Andrew Hodgeson in another RS100, then Ted Garner in his Solo.

After a short lunch, the course was modified to make better use of the wind to 9, 7, B, D and back through the gate between 10 and the pontoon for two races, which were sailed back to back.

Race 2 win being taken by Ian Lees in his D-Zero followed by Andy and Andrew in their RS100's.

Race 3 was taken by the series leader Pete Coop in his Streaker followed by Ian in his D-Zero then Paul Newman in another Streaker.

It was great to see some juniors out enjoying the Brenig sunshine and wind with Ieuan Kelly being the first Brenig sailor, on only his second outing in his ILCA. The visitors were very enthusiastic about the day and gave a massive thank-you to Brenig's volunteer team (as always as without these volunteers none of these events could take place) who ran the whole event perfectly.

The visitors will be back next year.

So why not come and join our friendly Tuesday club? It's better than being at work!
