The 9th annual Storm Trysail Ted Hood Regatta took over Marblehead's waters this past weekend co-hosted by Corinthian Yacht Club and Eastern Yacht Club.
A fleet of 36 boats was split among One Design and PHRF Divisions with two classes in each. J/105s and Finns were the two one design boats racing. The regatta also served as the 2026 Finn Masters North American Championship.
The Finn class competed in eight races spread across three days starting on Friday, August 14. Twenty-two sailors representing Canada, the United States, and the US Virgin Islands vied for the championship title, including 91-year-old Gus Miller, who has been sailing in the class since the 1960s.
The competition remained extremely close in the class throughout the weekend, with top competitors remaining tied for the top spot through six races. Ultimately, just one point separated Darrell Peck aboard Scott's Boat USA 35 in first place and John F. Dane and Another Wet Nightmare USA69 in second. Rounding out the podium in third was Luke Buxton on X USA180.
"The 9th Annual Ted Hood Regatta was huge success with 36 boats competing which includes 22 Finns participating in the Finns Master's North Americans" said Regatta Director and STC Fleet Captain Clarke Smith. "The Finn sailors are a great group of people and that brought enthusiasm and spirit to the regatta. The Storm Trysail Club Marblehead Station, co-host clubs, and the volunteers made the regatta a great success, despite some head winds. Thank you to all who played a part!"
"Plenty of strong competition and excellent race management team made for great sailing at the 2026 Ted Hood Regatta," added Principal Race Officer Ray Redniss. "The weather cooperated save for lighter breeze to start out on Sunday. However, after waiting and restarting, the day featured the same Chamber of Commerce conditions as Friday and Sturday."
Matthew Herbster and the crew aboard No Quarter dominated the J/105 class, winning all four of that class' races. Charlie Garrard and and Idalin were second across the line for three of the four and took second place overall, with Ric Dexter's Brouhaha in third.
The close competition in the PHRF 1 Class was won by David Powers' Beneteau First 36.7 Agora, who traded wins in individual races with the other two podium finishers. Kim Breed and Tom Linkas' Farr 30 INDRA took silver and Fred deNapoli's Beneteau First 10R Black Magic brought home bronze.
Peter Pappas' J/80 Cyclade beat out Linda Hosking's C&C 40-2TR Ares in the smaller PHRF 2 Class.
