Clinker Open at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

by Jennie Clark 16 Aug 20:53 BST 15-16 August 2026

OSSC held their annual open meeting for clinker built boats over the weekend of 15 and 16 August 2026.

The entry requirements are relatively simple - boats have to be of ribbed construction and the fleet this weekend comprised a fleet of 7 Twinkle Twelve and Family Fourteen dinghies. In terms of the crew requirements the ability to bail quickly with a bucket can be very useful, as some found out this weekend!

Saturday's race started at 7.30am and the Race Officer, Rodney Tidd, set a 'triangle/sausage' course out in the lagoon. The sun shone but it was noticeably cooler than the previous couple of days. The wind was from the north and it was a high tide with the marshes covered for most of the race time. Two races were held.

Sunday's race was scheduled to start at 7.45am but with a very light wind and a strong tide it didn't look hopeful for racing however a delay to 8.30am to 'see what happens' was the right call and the fleet launched and enjoyed a decent breeze out in the lagoon. The finish line for the second race was set off the quay, giving spectators a chance to cheer home the fleet.

Julie Carroll and Lou Turner were the overall winners in the Twinkle 12 'Honey Bun'.
