The UYC VX One European Open Regatta was held over three days in the beautiful setting of Ullswater in the Lake District, attracting competitors from as far afield as Germany.

Fierce competition across an intense schedule of 11 races saw the lead change hands between several boats over the course of the regatta.

Racing conditions proved challenging, with the local weather delivering sunshine, rain and constantly changing winds. Race Officer Andy Young did a magnificent job setting excellent courses in the shifting breeze.

Friday brought shifty winds beneath cloud-filled skies, while Saturday saw the strongest conditions, with gusts reaching 30 knots and regular gusts in excess of 25 knots. Sunday began in lighter winds before the breeze once again built throughout the day.

It was a spectacular sight to watch the fleet's colourful spinnakers flying downwind with Helvellyn framed in the background.

The event was further enhanced by the delicious food served in the clubhouse on both evenings. Saturday night also featured an entertaining conversation with Jon Emmett, the renowned world-class sailor and coach. There were plenty of hints and tips to take away, along with fascinating stories from his sailing career.

By the end of Sunday, many very tired — but happy — faces departed Ullswater, hopefully to return again soon.

Thanks go to the very many volunteers involved, both on and off the water. This event would not happen without the countless hours of work they contribute, and their efforts are very much appreciated.
