Tune it, tweak it, send it: Melges 24 U.S. Nationals is almost here

With the 2026 Melges 24 U.S. National Championship racing set to begin on Friday, August 14th, preparations at every level are entering their final stage at Grand Traverse Yacht Club (GTYC) in Traverse City, Michigan.
Currently, 47 amazing Melges 24 teams are registered and almost ready to compete, bringing together a hyper-strong group of racers for three days of close one-design competition on Grand Traverse Bay.
However, before the boats reach the starting line, competitors and organizers still have plenty of work to complete.
Crews are making their final practice sessions count, boats are receiving the final touches and tuning, and crew lists are being completed and confirmed. For some, the Class is working hard getting Corinthian sailors through the World Sailing verification process, which ultimately confirms their eligibility to race in the hotly contested all-amateur division. Event organizers are hard at work tending to the details required to host and deliver world-class race management and superb shoreside activities.
All of this helps further ensure that every Melges 24 team arrives prepared to compete under the same class rules and standards—and that one of the fleet's most coveted trophy and title is ultimately decided where it should be: on the water.
"Attendance for this year's Nationals has already exceeded expectations. We've surpassed last year's entry count by at least seven boats, with more entries still possible. That's a tremendous sign of the momentum building around the Melges 24 Class in the U.S., across North America, and around the world," said USM24CA President Geoff Fargo, 2024 U.S. National Champion and owner of Sentinel.
"With the World Championship just a month away, this turnout is a clear reflection of the growth and strength of the North American fleet. The Nationals in Traverse City are shaping up to be an incredible event—fun, competitive, and fiercely contested. For teams with their sights set on winning the Worlds, this will be the ultimate dress rehearsal: a chance to put their programs and crews to the test and see where they stand before heading to Harbor Springs."
Competitors can expect typical Grand Traverse Bay conditions, close competition and the shoreside atmosphere that has become a hallmark of marquee Melges 24 events. A dedicated group of sponsors, volunteers and GTYC members are working to create an event that delivers as much off the water as it does on it.
"Hosting this championship is something our entire club is excited about," said Regatta Chairman Scot Zimmerman, former U.S. Melges 24 Class President, current International Melges 24 Class Association World Council member and owner/driver of Bad Idea. "Traverse City is an incredible place to sail, but what makes an event memorable is the people who come together to make it happen. We're looking forward to welcoming teams for outstanding racing, great competition, and the kind of championship experience that keeps sailors coming back."
To boost participation further, the Grand Traverse Foundation in conjunction with GTYC, are offering free entry fee to Corinthian qualifying teams that register and race the event between now and the close of registration on Thursday, August 13.
The Nationals is the final major U.S. event before next month's World Championship in Harbor Springs, taking place on September 19-26. Many of the fleet's leading teams will use Traverse City as an opportunity to measure themselves against strong competition and evaluate how well their programs are developing. Some of those teams are present in Traverse City, some are not so there is still much to be learned.
For now, the focus remains on the final preparations. By Friday, all eyes and attention will turn to Grand Traverse Bay, where an expanding Melges 24 fleet that could top as many as 50 teams will begin the hard-fought contest for the 2026 U.S. National Championship title and trophy.
