Cadet class World Championship 2026 at Circolo Vela Torbole - Overall

There was all to play for on the final day of the Cadet World Championship at Circolo Vela Torbole in Garda.

The maximum number of races permitted per day was increased from 3 to 4, but the wind looked light. Everyone arrived early. Initially sailors were held ashore on an indefinite postponement. With thunder and lightning, many crews were rightly apprehensive about launching given the previous day's storm.

The fabled southerly Ora wind didn't come in so all 4 races were on the northerly Peler which dropped as the day wore on.

GBR's hopes were with Bruce Ward and Alex Harker in the world championship and Emily Krailing and Jemima Cox-Olliff in the promotional regatta. The second discard would kick in after 10 races which would shake up the leaderboard, particularly in the promo fleet where India's Chandralekha Tattari and Sunchanakota Rishwitha had high scores from the opening day to remove.

In the world championships the day started well for GBR with Ward and Harker's 2nd place in race 8. In race 9, GBR boats Ward and Harker and George Cox-Olliff and Evie Winchester started near the pin end and worked the left hand side of the beat. These two boats rounded the first windward mark with a commanding lead over the rest of the fleet with a lot of the overall competition a long way back.

Both GBR boats extended their lead over the fleet and finished with Ward and Harker ahead of Cox-Olliff and Winchester. This was Ward and Harker's impressive 3rd race win of the regatta. While Ward and Harker held the lead for the event, the wind started to die in race 10 which made for tricky conditions. This opened the door for Ukraine's David Gutiiev and Katrina Butenko. Guttiev (2nd as crew at the 2024 Worlds in Plymouth) and Butenko (1st crew at the 2025 Lipno Worlds) took victory in the final race and with it the world championship.

Ward and Harker, who carried British hopes into the final race were hampered by the significantly fickle breeze causing a high-scoring final 2 races meaning that they dropped down to 4th overall behind the strong challenge from the 2 Australian teams of Will Garner and Jack O'Brien in 2nd and Jack Benyan and Farrell Meegan in 3rd.

Ward and Harker will feel rightly aggrieved that the scores for the original race 8, which was abandoned during the stormy finish, were not allowed to stand, but showed maturity and sportsmanship to accept the decision with good grace.

When asked what was the key to his week, Bruce Ward commented: "Boat speed, just getting really good boat speed. When you have good boat speed the rest comes with it. Next year I'm going for a hybrid of 420s and Cadets. I'll try and get the win next year, that would be great!"

George Cox-Olliff, who finished 6th overall, said "When we got that 5th place in the first race my confidence increased as I knew we had the boat speed. I wanted to make the top 20 so I'm definitley very happy with where we came."

Ava Stoddart, who finished 13th overall, stated "on the last beat all the wind dropped and there was huge gust on one side. Hugely unfair but I dont think they will abandon it because it was the last beat". Like many of the GBR team, Ava is looking forward to a last hurrah at the UK Nationals at Pweheli before moving on from Cadets. Ava commented on her cadet career: "Just enjoy it. It goes really quickly. You go from a young crew who doesn't know anyone to all your friends leaving. Make friends with all the sailors around you. I've made friends for life."

Dylan McArdle, competing in his 4th world championship said "The wind was not typical for what Garda's known for. Normally Garda has a strong Ora breeze in the afternoons and we saw that in the training week. This week's been a mix of storms and some very light days."

It was equally frustrating for GBR in the promotional regatta. Emily Krailing and Jemima Cox-Olliff were leading going into the final race. They did everything right at the start by tacking out to the right to cover the main competition of Chandralekha Tattari & Sunchanakota Rishwitha and Matilda Groves & Poppy Loftus from Australia. By the end of the race a 40 degree shift enabled Groves and Loftus to take victory in the race which was enough to win the regatta from Tattari & Rishwitha on countback.

Krailing and Cox-Olliff were 1 point back in third overall. Emily Krailing commented: "The key to the event for me was consistency in varied conditions. I was surprised how varied it was. When race 8 was abandoned, I wasn't doing that well but it would have been enough to win the event."

A notable performance in the promos was Jude Baldock and Hugh Hung who won race 10.

Other GBR boats in the top 10 were Tom Krailing and Issy Stock (5th), Joe Mycroft and Elizabeth Thorpe (7th), and Kali Karaskas and Araminta Denny Pickess (10th).

Mycroft, who is only in his 2nd year of helming said "Really good. We've had a few good races and some that were not so good. We're one of the lighter crews so really pleased that we were able to handle the wind."

Charlie Jones and Francis Lonardo scored a 2nd in race 10 to follow up their 1st and 2nd earlier in the week, but then dropped to 11th after a UFD in race 11.
