Governor's Cup Day 2: Tight at the top - James Hayhoe (AUS) now tied with Josh Hyde (NZL)

In golf, "Moving Day" is the last day before the field is cut down after the qualification round. Today was not Moving Day for the Governor's Cup, but there were many moves up and down as a new leader emerged and the competition tightened up significantly.
The "GovCup," hosted annually by Balboa Yacht Club for 59 years, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing champion in the world.
Unlike yesterday, when Josh Hyde (NZL, Royal New Zealand YS) was the clear leader on 8-0, James Hayhoe (AUS, Royal Freshwater Bay YC) has caught up to a tie for the lead with Hyde. They are both on 12 wins.
"None of these matches are easy," Hayhoe said after the day's racing. "In our race with Josh we had a penalty to kill just before the finish. We managed to do it, and won only by only a meter."
Close behind the two leaders are Sam Scott (NZL, Royal New Zealand YS) in third on ten wins, and Siena Nichols (USA, Balboa YC) in fourth on nine. Nichols, at 17, is the youngest competitor by two years.
As of this evening, 15 of the total 22 flights in the double round-robin have been completed.
Perhaps today's most surprising result was Morgan Pinckney (USA, Newport Harbor YC), the 2026 Youth Match Racing World Champion. After starting today with three straight wins, he went 1-3 in his last four matches. Pinckney now stands tied for fifth on eight wins, ironically with Youth Worlds runner-up Daniel Kemp (AUS, Royal Prince Alfred YC), and Christian Prendergast (USA, Chicago YC).
In one of Pinckney's losses today, he ended up with kelp on his keel and had to back down mid-race to clear it, losing the lead in the process.
With seven flights tomorrow (Thursday) to complete the second round robin, the top four are currently two points clear of Kemp, Pinckney and Prendergast. It is still possible that any of these three teams could advance to the Semi-finals. But tonight, Hayhoe and Hyde must be feeling good about their Semi-final chances.
The head-to-head Semi-finals, first to win three, begin Friday. The winners advance to the first-to-win three Finals on Saturday.
Today's conditions in the Pacific Ocean off Newport Beach — 7-9 knots under clear skies, warm temps and low humidity — were near perfect for the 12 experienced teams in the provided GovCup 22s. Most of the matches were close, with the matches finishing within a couple boat lengths of each other if not overlapped after the four-leg windward-leeward courses.
