Governor's Cup: Josh Hyde (NZL) leads Governor's Cup with dominant 8-0 record - Day 1

2025 Semi-finalist Josh Hyde of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron had a perfect day at the 59th Governor's Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship.
Now leading the first of two round-robins in the event, in which each team will sail against every other team twice. Hyde won some key matches against other highly regarded sailors, including 2026 Youth Match Racing World Champion Morgan Pinckney (USA) and Sam Scott (NZL), who is tied for second with James Hayhoe.
Those key wins could prove important if — as is often the case — GovCup teams that don't have a great first day come back strong in the rest of the round robins. Although local favorite Siena Nichols (USA) and her Balboa Yacht Club crew lost to Hyde in their match, they are in fourth place, only one point behind Scott and Hayhoe. At 17, she is by far the youngest skipper in the fleet but already has won numerous youth match racing events, including twice getting to the finals at the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup.
Given that the two sailors who have dominated the Governor's Cup for the last five years, Jeffrey Petersen (USA) and Cole Tapper (AUS), with two wins each during that period, there are no clear favorites this year. But many observers give an edge to the new world champion, Pinckney. That proved not to be the case today as he ended up with a 3-5 record. However, Pinckney, who is also a two-time former Rose Cup champion, has proven to be very resilient over the years and is certainly able to come back with 14 round-robin races to go. The runner-up in the Worlds, Daniel Kemp (AUS), also had a mixed day with a 4-4 record but has yet to sail against Hyde.
Conditions were 6-7 knots from the south-southwest, more than enough to power up the S/C Alan Andrews designed Governor's Cup 22 sloops used in the championship. The Principal Race Officers Dr. Don Becker and BYC Director Pamela Kreiser were able to get in a record eight flights, which should make the completion of the full event program much easier.
The Governor's Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing championship in the world. It includes among its "alumni" many of the finest sailors in the world today, led by two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS).
This year, all three finalists for the prestigious U.S. Rolex Yachtsman of the Year — Justin Callahan, Taylor Canfield and Paul Cayard — have sailed in the GovCup. And, most recently, Cole Tapper (AUS), who won his second GovCup last year, went on to win the most prestigious of the World Match Racing Tour events, the Congressional Cup, mainly sailed by professionals, with no age limits, in May.
