Musto Lark National Championship 2026 hosted by Fowey Sailing - Day 3

by Clive Eplett 28 Jul 15:32 BST 26-29 July 2026

You can't always get what you want. We can't get no satisfaction. And there's no sympathy for the devil that is this weather.

Poor old PRO John Burford is probably on his 19th nervous breakdown, you'd have to have a heart of stone not to empathise; so he'd be a fool to cry but he might need emotional rescue. Lucky he's cool, calm and collected.

As the photos show, there was a sailable wind in the harbour, but its back to zero outside. A four-hour hang fire postponement was flagged in the hope we could then do more than drift away. No expectations though, I think. What a shame. Gives you the summertime blues.

Proposals on what to do from your Fowey-boy correspondent and his brother, that we race in the estuary hardly have everyone crackin' up, instead just doom and gloom. Anyone would think I know it like the back of my hand, said Jerry. Funny, they did bite my head off with regard to my pasty provider recommendations though.

Just remember to put the cream first on your scone is to commit a crime.

Matt Shorrock won yesterday's Duckhams, congratulations, making it two from three for the wind in Fowey harbour that goes around and around. Matt's biggest mistake was thinking the boom would stay roughly where it was as he answered a call of nature. It hit me in the head he said. Maddie said there was "too much blood", then "I'm covered in you".

Meantime, Matt could not hold back, let it bleed and continued as if it was the last time ever for him.

Back to today; then it came, the N over A. It's all over now. Shame, shame, shame. Weather, you win again, you give us the summertime blues.

Which means it's light the fuse, under cover of the night, to the Gallants for a BBQ (Beggars Banquet?) and under the sea fancy dress. I suspect some of us will be told to try a little harder. Nevertheless, it should go down with bigger bang than the (lack of) sailing, but we'll try and avoid an aftermath of speaking in foreign tongues.

I'm not a fortune teller, but the forecast looks better for tomorrow, so we can't yet say it's all over now. Wind, we miss you, even after you were a bigger bang bitch on Saturday.

P.S. The answer is, of course, 42.
