18-19 July 2026
The K1 class enjoyed a memorable first visit to Rock Sailing & Waterski Club in Cornwall, with the stunning backdrop of the Camel Estuary, golden beaches and glorious summer sunshine providing the perfect setting for a superb weekend of racing.
Competitors received a warm Cornish welcome from the host club on Friday evening, gathering on the terrace to enjoy fish and chips in the evening sunshine before looking ahead to the weekend's competition.
Saturday delivered classic "champagne sailing" conditions out in the bay, with 12-18 knots of breeze and testing Atlantic swell providing exhilarating racing. The fleet produced close, tactical contests throughout the day, with Jeremy Hudson and Richard Sims quickly emerging as the leading contenders, regularly swapping places at the front of the fleet.
Hudson held the overnight advantage after an impressive opening day, posting two race wins and a second place to lead the standings. Behind him, Richard had a first and 2 seconds while Chris Swallow demonstrated his trademark consistency with three third-place finishes to keep himself firmly in contention.
Back ashore, the excellent hospitality continued with homemade pizzas and plenty of laughter in the clubhouse, where tales of the day's waves seemed to grow larger with every retelling.
Sunday presented a fresh challenge as the wind swung through almost 180 degrees. The day began with a lively 12-14 knots before steadily easing to 8-10 knots, transforming both the sea state and the style of racing. The flatter water and lighter breeze brought new faces into the leading group, with Richard Frost producing an excellent second place in Race 5, while Rock's own Huw Willetts improved steadily throughout the day, delighting the home supporters with increasingly competitive performances.
With the series finely balanced, everything came down to the final race. Hudson and Sims entered the decider knowing that whichever of them finished ahead would take the overall title. After another intensely close contest, Sims crossed the line just four to five boat lengths ahead of Hudson to seal a thoroughly deserved overall victory and cap a superb weekend of racing. Another example of just how close the racing is within the K1 fleet.
The inaugural K1 Open Meeting at Rock Sailing & Waterski Club proved an outstanding success, combining excellent race management, outstanding hospitality and first-class sailing conditions in one of the country's most picturesque venues.
The K1 Class extends its sincere thanks to everyone at Rock Sailing & Waterski Club for organising such a well-run and memorable event. Thanks also go to the class's valued sponsors, Ovington Boats and Craftinsure, for their continued support of K1 racing.
