Commodore's Invitational 2026 at Royal Anglesey Yacht Club

by Antony Robinson 7 Jul 20:33 BST 5 July 2026

This weekend at the RAYC we hosted the first Commodore's Invitational where eleven clubs from the region were invited to race the local one-design Fife keelboats who celebrate their 100th anniversary this year.

After three very competitive races in perfect conditions the overall winners were Trearddur Bay Sailing Club, 2nd Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club, 3rd West Kirby Sailing Club.

After racing everyone came back to the club for a fantastic BBQ where it was great to see so many familiar faces and new from the various clubs and hear all the stories from the day's racing.

Huge thanks to everyone that helped and the owners for allowing us to use their boats in making the day such a success. I am already looking at dates for next year and will hopefully build on the success of this year's event.

It was a fantastic event and really bought the clubs together, so much so that we have members from the various clubs asking to race these beautiful boats on a regular basis.

Clubs that attended:

Royal Dee Yacht Club
Royal Mersey Yacht Club
West Kirby Sailing
Club, Hoylake Sailing Club
Conway Yacht Club
Llanfairfechan Sailing Club
Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club
Trearddur Bay Sailing Club
Port Dinorwic Sailing Club
Royal Welsh Yacht Club
Pwllheli Sailing Club

Considering forecasts, it was a pleasant surprise to arrive in Beaumaris Having watched the weather forecast over the preceding days, it was a pleasant surprise to arrive in Beaumaris to be greeted with 'sailable' conditions for a change, a 3/4 South Westerly but no sun, but then we can't have everything we wish for. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end Sadly this was the final season for Howard Mattocks and number 7, Siglen. Having launched the boat after a complete rebuild in 1989 and sailed it until this season (I make that 33 years!!), Howard having decided its time to 'swallow the anchor'. Posted on 25 Sep 2022

Should have done the lottery! The penultimate race of the season saw the fleet presented with a fairly gentle and variable NW breeze and a building Menai Bridge bound tide. Although the programme suggested a 'long distance race', common sense prevailed. Posted on 19 Sep 2022
