With the completion of two more races on Wednesday, the Squib Nationals are now at the half way point.
The day started with the class's AGM where the main discussion focused on the build of the new Squib which is progressing well by JJ Boats and expected to be on display at the 2027 RYA Dinghy Show.
As has been the story of the week, there was a postponement, however, not as long as some expected as a few were seen running to the club having missed the D flag being hoisted. Thankfully all made the start of race 3 which got off promptly thanks to the smooth organisation of the PRO and his team.
With a north westerly breeze of about 10-15knots crews were happily hiked out and corners banged on the way to the windward mark. First round the mark was Budgies Tongue (Jack Grogan and Chris Agar) who stretched their lead through the run. They were chased down by a group of about 6 boats including Harry VI, Chequemate, Squib and Willpower who then had the decision as to which of the leeward marks to round. With Budgies Tongue sailing in clear air it was the battle for 2nd and 3rd which went right to the wire however it was Harry VI taking 2nd and Chequemate upgrading their 4th from the day before to a 3rd in this race.
A short postponement before race 4 as the race team slightly adjusted the angles of the course however again to the amazement of some, the fleet got off cleanly. The favoured side was to head to the left of the course but for some, including Spoof and Brimstone, that option was not immediately available so they initially headed to the right to find clear air. This fortunately paid and they thankfully joined the front end of the fleet by the windward mark. After a slightly challenging race 3, RicO'shea was back on top form and rounded the mark in first place with the very consistent Chequemate in second and Harry VI close behind. The wind was slightly dropping and some crews had found themselves back on the leeward seat. The PRO made the sensible call to bring the windward mark closer enabling the completion of the 3 laps as the fleet battled for positions. In the final lap many positions changed as teams worked out the shifts however, as is often the case, RicO'shea steamed ahead without bother. In a repeat of the race before it was Harry VI and Chequemate who took the remaining podium positions.
So at the half way point (& with the first discard now in place) RicO'shea currently leads with Chequemate in second followed by Spoof however the scores are all close and there is plenty to play for.
However we are in the hands of the wind gods and the postponement flag has again gone back up...
