2026 MYA Scottish District IOM Travellers 2 at Paisley Model Yacht Club

by David Smith 2 Jun 06:03 BST 30 May 2026

Twelve IOM skippers from across Scotland and one from south of the border assembled at Barshaw Park, Paisley for the second round of the 2026 MYA Scottish District's IOM Travellers series.

Eleven different designs were represented in several different materials including three 'woodies' (Ian Dundas' Nexus, John Owens' Corbie 1 & David Redpath's Corbie 6) and 3D printed Alioth V2 for David Stewart's as well as Tich Summers' and Gordon Allison's Proteus.

By the scheduled starting time of 11:00 the cloud had rolled in with the forecast breeze giving good racing conditions with interesting shifts either side of the predominant direction. At the briefing the Race Officer, Robert Rooney, announced that the course would be a beat from the north-east corner of the pond to the south-west corner followed by a run back concluding with a beat to a finish line in the south-west corner. Based on the length of the available start line it was decided to sail the event in two heats.

Tich Summers and John Owens progressed from the B seeding heat to A Heat for Race 2, accompanied by Ian Dundas and Stewart Campbell from the A seeding heat. After the B Heat of Race 2 they were joined by Simon Thomson, Richard Rowan, Ted Johnston and Ian Davidson. Ian Dundas won Race 2, followed by Simon Thomson, Richard Rowan and Tich Summers. Permutations of these four skippers were to be found leading the next few races. Tich Summers won Race 3 followed by Ian Dundas, Simon Thomson and John Owens, then Simon Thomson won Race 4 followed by Tich Summers, Stewart Campbell and Ian Dundas. Ian Dundas moved to the front in Race 5 followed by Richard Rowan, Tich Summers and Simon Thomson. The lunch break was taken at 13:10.

The racing resumed at 13:40. The conditions remained overcast with occasional periods of very light drizzle which did not require the use of waterproofs. The usual suspects led Race 6 with an incursion by local Paisley skipper, Cameron Darroch, taking 2nd place in his first outing at this level. Cameron couldn't sustain his spot in A Heat in Race 7 but his role as 'intruder' was taken by southern visitor Roger Errington who took 3rd place. The experienced local skipper, Gordon Allison, took a leading position in Race 8 for the first time in the event, reaching 3rd place.

By the time the A Heat of Race 9 was reached it appeared that the breeze had swung round to the west, as forecast for the afternoon, and a new course was established across the southern end of the pond. This was a beat from east to west, a short reach to the south followed by a run back east concluding with a final beat to the finish line. Tich Summers won Race 9, followed by Simon Thomson, Gordon Allison and Stewart Campbell. However, the breeze was only toying with the skippers and returned to its previous, generally south-westerly, direction.

Race 10 reverted to a variation on the original north-east to south-west course of a beat, a run and a final beat, and was won by John Owens, having his best result of the day, followed by Stewart Campbell, Simon Thomson and Gordon Allison. Simon Thomson won Race 11, followed by Gordon Allison and an 'intruder,' Ted Johnston, both achieving their best positions of the day, and Tich Summers. By general agreement, racing then concluded for the day as the time was just shy of 16:30.

The Scorer quickly produced the final scores. First was Tich Summers, second was Simon Thomson and third was Ian Dundas. Tich Summers thanked Paisley MYC for hosting the event, the Race Team of Robert Rooney, David Smith, David Bell, Jim Boyle, John McVicar & William Scott, for the smooth and effective running of the event, and his fellow skippers for their sportsmanship throughout the day.
