Downs Sailing Club hosted a challenging early-season KSSA opener off Deal, with light airs and a strong tide putting sailors and race team to the test - while offering a timely preview ahead of the NSSA National Youth Regatta later this summer.
- Where: Downs Sailing Club, Deal
- Event: KSSA Opening Splash Regatta
- Format: Two courses (Main Fleet and Regatta Fleet)
- Conditions: Light airs with a pronounced tidal stream
- Looking ahead: Downs SC hosts the NSSA National Youth Regatta later this summer
The Kent Schools Sailing Association (KSSA) season began with the Opening Splash Regatta at Downs Sailing Club, Deal. With Downs also due to host the NSSA National Youth Regatta later this summer, the weekend offered an early look at the venue and race management.
A strong turnout from across the region, with particularly impressive representation from Downs SC, was split across two courses: a Main Fleet and a Regatta Fleet.
The dual-course format continues to encourage newer sailors into racing, while keeping the sharp end highly competitive for more experienced crews.
The conditions offered a true showcase of Downs' renowned race area. Light, shifting winds combined with the ever-present tidal stream along the Goodwin Sands to create an engaging, tactically rich racecourse.
Success depended on accurate starts, minimising manoeuvres, and linking pressure lines to tidal positioning - skills tested across both fleets and rewarded in those able to stay in phase with the changes.
A notable wind shift during the day required a course reset. As the tide strengthened later on, start-line discipline became critical, with a general recall ensuring fair racing.
In the Main Fleet, racing under Portsmouth Yardstick was defined by consistency and strong race awareness. Sailors from Whitstable YC, Downs SC, Margate YC and Medway YC were regularly in the mix, with close racing across a spread of classes including ILCA, Topper and double-handers.
A series of front-of-fleet battles developed through the day, with race wins and podium places changing hands - evidence of the fleet's depth.
On the Regatta course, very light winds and a pronounced tide provided a valuable introduction to racing. A compact, inshore triangular track enabled well-managed starts and quick turnarounds, with multiple races completed.
In the light airs, progress relied on careful trim and momentum - particularly for Optimist sailors, where technique and positioning proved decisive.
Despite the testing conditions, the fleet delivered an excellent display of determination and developing skill. Downs SC's Henry Moss took overall honours, while sailors from clubs including Chipstead SC and The King's School showed strong progression and consistency throughout the series.
Results
The prize-giving reflected the breadth of boats on the water. Kevin Geng and David Liu (The King's School) came out on top in the Fevas, while Willian Graham (Whitstable YC) set the pace in the Toppers overall. In the Topper 4.2 fleet, Jacob Grilli (Downs SC) took the win, with Matthew Williams (Downs SC) in 2nd - a great marker of his progression from KSSA Training through to ILCA events. Special Endeavour went to Dylan Irons (Downs SC) after a determined push to finish the final race in his Topper 4.2, and Seb Robb and Dan Hebditch (Downs SC) also earned a mention for sailing their 29er well in conditions that were far from ideal for the boat. The first female sailor prize was awarded to Dora Wang and Athena Cox (The King's School), sailing a 2000. Over on the Regatta course, Joshua Gillow (Chipstead SC) won in an Optimist, with Charlotte Sutton-Do and Lynna Venema Van Iersel (The King's School) taking 2nd in a Feva.

Henry Moss: 'It's brilliant to come back and race here'
Reflecting on the day - and his own sailing journey - Downs SC's Henry Moss said:
"I have been sailing at Downs since the age of eight, starting in Toppers and more recently transitioning into the ILCA fleet. Early training locally and through KSSA gave me my first race skills, which have led on to regional and national competition.
Now training regularly in Weymouth as part of the Performance Academy, I'm constantly developing and really enjoying racing on the national circuit.
Conditions here were challenging, with less than five knots of wind and a strong tide, making it tough for both sailors and the race team. It was great racing, and huge credit to the race officer for getting quality races completed. Downs has played a big part in my journey, and it's brilliant to come back and race here."
Perhaps most notable was the spirit across both fleets. Sailors came ashore smiling after a long day on the water, with special recognition for those who battled the tide to the very end.
Their patience and determination captured the ethos of the event.
Ashore, the atmosphere reflected the strength of the KSSA community. With a great turnout from Downs SC and visiting clubs, cadets, coaches and supporters created a welcoming, energetic environment throughout.
Looking ahead: NSSA National Youth Regatta at Downs SC
With Downs Sailing Club set to host the NSSA National Youth Regatta this summer, the Opening Splash offered an early preview of both venue and race management. The combination of tactical sailing waters and a supportive shore team should make for a strong national event, with entries expected from clubs across the country. A dedicated Regatta Fleet will again help keep the weekend accessible to sailors at all levels.
Thanks go to all volunteers, race officials and supporting clubs, with a special mention to the galley team for keeping everyone so well fed.
The season is now firmly under way, and anticipation for the summer continues to build.
