Olympic Classes as the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels - Prize Giving

by Trofeo S.A.R. Princesa Sofía 5 Apr 07:48 BST 27 March - 4 April 2026

The awards ceremony for the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels brought the curtain down on a thrilling edition, which saw the debut of new competition formats ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

The event served to honour the winners of each of the ten Olympic classes and to crown the Swedes Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson, in the Nacra 17 class, as overall winners.

The event, held at Ses Voltes, at the foot of Palma Cathedral, was presided over by the Mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez; the Regional Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Jaume Bauzà; the Regional Minister for Tourism of the Council of Mallorca, Jose Marcial Rodríguez; the Mayor of Llucmajor, Mª Francisca Lascolas; the Director General of Sport for Palma City Council, David Salom; and the Manager of Ports IB, Francisco Villalonga.

Also in attendance were the Vice-President of World Sailing, Dave Hughes; the President of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Joaquín González Devesa; the President of the Balearic Sailing Federation, Catalina Darder; the President of the Royal Yacht Club of Palma, Rafael Gil; the President of the San Antonio de la Playa Maritime Club, Juan Miguel Català; and the Commodore of the S'Arenal Yacht Club, Mariano Cazador; and the founder and Executive President of the FERGUS Group, Pep Cañellas, amongst other dignitaries.

The Swedes Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson, winners of the Nacra 17 class, were crowned overall champions of the 55th edition after leading their class throughout the championship. At the end of the ceremony, Järudd and Jonsson lifted the iconic Princess Sofia trophy, which bears the names of the overall winners from every edition. The Swedes dedicated this very special victory to their grandparents, both of whom had passed away during the week, in what was a highly satisfying championship from a sporting perspective but a very difficult one on a personal level.

The winners of the ten classes represented a total of nine nationalities, out of the 62 that took part in this edition, which saw nearly 900 boats and over 1,100 sailors competing.

In addition to Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson, the Spanish teams on the podium received a special round of applause at the awards ceremony: Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona, winners in the 470 Mixed class, and Paula Barceló and María Cantero, bronze medallists in the 49erFX class following a cruel penalty in the final metres of the second final race, when they were sailing towards gold in this first stage of the Sailing Grand Slam circuit.

The 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels is organised by Bahía Activa (the foundation formed by the Real Club Náutico de Palma, the Club Nàutic Arenal, the Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and the Balearic Sailing Federation) and is supported by World Sailing. The event is co-financed by the Balearic Islands Government's Sustainable Tourism Tax fund and sponsored by the Mallorca Responsible Tourism Foundation. The event forms part of the 2026 Sailing Grand Slam alongside the Semaine Olympique Française, Dutch Water Week, Kieler Woche and the Long Beach & San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta.
