Medway RC Laser Club Winter Series - Day 11

by Jamie Blair 22 Mar 15:47 GMT 22 March 2026

Dazzling light air racing and moments to "roll the dice"

Today with the shifty NE breeze and anything from 5 knots to 10 knots the course was set to minimise the no wind area in front of the café. A reaching start gave ample opportunity to practice time on distance. Time on distance went out the door when the wind picked up in the last few seconds resulting in a couple of OCS.

The blue sky brought out many spectators but the focus was on for the sailors particularly the leeward mark that was furthest from the shore. Tony Alexander (04) stamped his mark with two wins in the first five races. Jamie Blair (51), Lucian Stone (75) and Tim Towsend (45) took the others. Tony led at race 5 with Jamie second and Lucian third. Tim and Bob Woolford (76) not at their best.

It was nip and tuck up tot the break after race 8 with Tony maintaining the overall lead but only on countback and Lucian three points adrift. Bob with some tweaking support notched up a second to count in race 6.

After the break it seemed like it was going to be a three way race to win overall. Tim showed early promise to upset the trio. Four different race winners in the six races. Lucian and Jamie two wins, Tony and Tim one each.

With the last race to start it could have been any of the trio to take the overall. Indeed, all morning with the shifting breeze the beat was difficult to gauge if the shift was as you rounded the mark, halfway up or for the approach to the windward mark. Places were won and lost with those willing to take a gamble and "roll the dice".

The next meet is 29th March. Usual start at 10am.
