Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series - Online meeting to discuss the future of handicap racing in the UK

The 17th edition of the Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series saw a dominant performance by Tom Gillard and Rachael Gray who sailed their Merlin Rocket to victory after eight events.

The son and father duo, Ben and Sam Pascoe won the final event of the series, the Oxford Blue, taking their 2000 dinghy to the runner-up spot in the overall series. And the third-placed Snipe, sailed by Matthew Wolstenholme and Eiichi Higuchi, is one example of the hugely diverse set of classes that took part across the winter. In total there were 94 different types of boat which competed across the Seldén Sailjuice Winter Series.

So there's a lot to celebrate, as many sailors did at the well-attended prize-giving at the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show last month. But how to make next season even better? Overall, entries were down compared with recent seasons and co-organisers of the Series, Simon Lovesey and Andy Rice, are keen to find out what makes people show up for events, and what keeps them away.

Next week, at 7.30pm on Wednesday 25 March, Simon and Andy are inviting a limited group of stakeholders to take part in a roundtable discussion to get a sense of what's working well and what can be improved for a better Series next winter.

SEEKING INPUT FROM SAILORS AND STAKEHOLDERS

Making the Series work requires not just the sailors to show up, but for sailing clubs, their paid staff and volunteers to put in the hard work on and off the water. And the sponsors are vital to the ongoing success of the Series too, starting with title sponsor Seldén but also Magic Marine, Navigators & General, as well as supporters of the events like resident coach Simon Horsfield, travelling photographer Tim Olin and the Great Lakes Group to run as fair a set of PY handicap numbers as possible.

SEEKING NEW PARTNERS AND CLUBS (FOR SUMMER & WINTER)

Last summer saw a reboot of the Sailjuice Challenge, effectively a Sailjuice Summer Series. These multi-class handicap events enjoyed good attendances, So Andy and Simon are looking to find out how much interest there is for expanding and growing the summer circuit. If you represent a club that is looking at running a multi-class event, or already have an event that you'd like to grow further, then this call will be a good place to find out more.
