After weeks of punishing winter weather, the fleet at the Brass Monkeys, sponsored by Tadg Riordan Motors, was finally rewarded with a day that felt more April than February. Sunny skies, flat seas, a steady south-westerly breeze and temperatures nudging into double digits combined to produce a superb day for sailing.
The improved conditions were not lost on anyone. The committee vessel was unusually well populated with race officials — several of whom were not even rostered but simply could not resist venturing afloat when it wasn't raining and the wind wasn't from the east. Equally impressive was the turnout on the water, with all thirteen competitors making it to the start line.
Forecasts throughout the week had promised south-westerly breezes and sunshine, though recent experience had taught us to treat such optimism with caution. On this occasion, however, the predictions proved correct — and how welcome it was.
With the wind settling at approximately 240° and holding between 12-14 knots, Course 12 — the longest possible option for that direction — was selected. The breeze oscillated between 230° and 250°, delivering a classic Brass Monkeys test featuring a proper mix of beats, reaches and runs.
Perhaps emboldened by the spring-like conditions, the fleet was keen at the start. Boat 1430 got slightly over-enthusiastic and found themselves over the line early, but quickly returned to correct their error before setting off in determined pursuit of the pack.
From there, the race unfolded cleanly. Pretty Polly demonstrated once again why she is so often at the sharp end, leading the fleet home with authority.
Special mention must go to Arcturus who, after damaging their main boom, elected to continue racing under jib alone and still crossed the finish line in good order. It was jokingly suggested aboard the committee vessel that while the Brass Monkeys rules prohibit spinnakers, Arcturus may be lobbying to extend the ban to mainsails as well. Whether that proposal gains traction remains to be seen.
With just one race remaining — now moved from Saturday to Sunday 1 March — the series finale promises another competitive outing, followed by the ever-popular Brass Monkeys Lunch.
