36th Palamós International Optimist Trophy - Day 1

by Jaume Soler 12 Feb 14:03 GMT 12-15 February 2026

The first day of the 36th Palamós International Optimist Trophy-20 Nations Cup saw all races scheduled for today cancelled due to the wind weather alert issued by the Government of Catalonia.

Participants and teams received an official notice from the organizing authority on Wednesday night regarding the alert issued by Civil Protection, which prohibits all sports and outdoor activities between 00:00 and 20:00 on Thursday, 12 February. In addition, an official and binding resolution from the Government of Catalonia has been published, preventing the holding of any outdoor activity during this period.

As a result, the Organizing Committee of the Palamós International Optimist Trophy has been forced to cancel the day's programme, always prioritizing the safety of sailors, coaches, and technical staff.

Race Director Carlos Palomares explained that "with the alert we have received, sailing is prohibited, even though conditions in this area of the Baix Empordà are not being affected by the strong winds being experienced in other parts of the central and southern Catalan coast." He added that "we respect what the authorities determine; we always prioritize the safety of the participants, and we hope that in the coming days conditions will calm down so that this entire fleet, which has arrived in Palamós from all over the world, can get out on the water."

For this reason, and looking ahead to Friday's racing, the Committee has decided to bring the start of racing forward to 10:00 a.m. in an effort to recover part of today's cancelled programme, as the wind forecast is favourable, with a Garbí (south-westerly) wind expected to blow at 12 to 15 knots.
