The sixth edition of the regatta organised by Marina Rubicón concludes with French, Dutch and Croatian champions after a full week of Olympic sailing across a wide range of conditions.
The Lanzarote International Regatta came to a close this Thursday with the decisive final day of racing for the Olympic classes ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and 49er, on the racecourse set off Marina Rubicón, in the south of Lanzarote.
Over four days of competition, the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets completed a total of 12 races, while the 49er class reached 16 races sailed, competing across a full spectrum of conditions throughout the week — from strong winds and waves to medium and light breezes. A complete test that rewarded the most solid and consistent sailors of the championship and once again confirmed Lanzarote as a reliable and demanding race venue.
Light winds and high tactical demands on the final day
The final day was sailed in lighter wind conditions than previous days, but still sufficient to complete the full programme. A west-southwesterly breeze averaging 7 to 8 knots required sailors to maximise tactical awareness and consistency in a highly technical finale.
The ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 fleets concluded the regatta with a Medal Series, consisting of two races reserved for the top ten sailors, while the 49er class raced in standard fleet format, completing four races on the final day.
Fischer and Péquin repeat victory in Marina Rubicón
French sailors Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin secured the overall victory in the 49er, standing on the top step of the podium in Marina Rubicón for the second time. Their first win came in 2024, when Lanzarote hosted the 49er World Championship, and their second now in 2026, confirming their strong connection with this racecourse.
Clément Péquin reflected on the victory and their return to Lanzarote:
"We are very happy to be back in Lanzarote this winter. It's a fantastic place to sail, and winning this regatta here is something very special for us."
His teammate Erwan Fischer highlighted consistency as the key to success:
"We tried to be as consistent as possible throughout the week. We sailed in very different conditions — today short and choppy seas, other days more waves, and also medium and light winds to finish the regatta. That makes this event very complete and demanding."
France's Lucas Rual and Emile Amoros secured second place, while Germany's Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger completed the 49er podium after a week-long high-speed battle.
Jonker takes ILCA 6 title with Hernández on the podium
Dutch sailor Maxime Jonker was crowned ILCA 6 champion after a very solid week, prevailing in a demanding and technical fleet.
Reflecting on her win, Jonker said:
"It's always nice to win, especially after a week with such varied conditions and strong competition. Lanzarote is a perfect place to sail and train, and racing here makes this victory even more special."
Belgian sailor Emma Plasschaert secured silver, while Spain's Isabel Hernández (RCN Gran Canaria) delivered an excellent performance to claim bronze, moving onto the podium after a strong final day with a fifth and a third, closing the regatta on a high note.
Jurisic dominates ILCA 7
Croatian sailor Filip Jurisic was crowned ILCA 7 champion after a highly consistent week, leading the standings from the early stages and adapting successfully to all conditions. Germany's Nik Aaron Willim and Hungary's Jonatan Vadnai completed the podium.
After racing, Jurisic summed up his performance:
"It's been a very demanding week, with strong and shifty winds at the beginning and lighter, more stable conditions at the end. We sailed in all kinds of situations, and I think I performed well in all of them, which was my goal. The new Medal format was a very good experience and a great training opportunity. I'm really happy."
