Gusty winds and grey skies have set the scene for the 62nd Australian Sabot Championships, currently under way at Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach, Queensland. Halfway through the nine-race championship series (28th December 2025 to 3rd January 2026), 55 young sailors aged 6 to 16 years from across Australia are demonstrating impressive skill, determination, and sportsmanship in challenging conditions.

The first six championship races have delivered exciting competition, with sailors showing strong boat-handling and smart tactical decisions despite the rain and shifting winds. From the shoreline and within the large spectator fleet, supporters cheer enthusiastically as young sailors race around the course. After racing, the Whitsunday Sailing Club clubhouse has been filled with laughter as sailors share stories and build friendships.

The Whitsunday region is gaining global recognition as part of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games sailing venue, giving young competitors the unique opportunity to race in waters that will soon host the world's best sailors.

After five races of the championship series, reigning champion Alyssa Mathieu continues to lead the fleet with an outstandingly consistent performance. With three races still to be sailed, the championship remains wide open.
