Rob Richardson's Musto Skiff tops an 87-boat entry at Loch Lomond

by Andy Rice 11 Sep 2025 13:41 BST 6-7 September 2025

Rob Richardson won the Loch Lomond Challenge last weekend, 6 & 7 September, event No.3 of this season's inaugural Magic Marine Sailjuice Challenge.

Shifting easterly winds with mostly dry conditions made for a great weekend sailing for the 87 boats that entered the event. Loch Lomond Sailing Club was hosting its second national event of the year, having been chosen as the venue for the International Moth Lowrider Scottish Championship. There was a good turn out from the Musto Skiff (8), lLCA (18) and Enterprise (7) classes as well as general handicap sailing as wide as foiling Moths to Toppers, along with the 13 lowriding Moths.

Three races each day for the main fleet and the Lowrider Moths doing eight races over two days - including one around the scenic island of the Loch - resulted in a bunch of tired but happy sailors, many of whom were experiencing this beautiful venue for the first time. The festivities were just as lively ashore in the bar on the Friday and Saturday, and the BBQ was well attended on the Saturday evening.

Racing was run under standard RYA PY numbers and the Musto Skiffs fared particularly well once the results from the separate fleets were merged into one set of scores for the Sailjuice Challenge. The Lowrider Moths did their own racing so don't feature in the combined scores on this occasion.

Emerging top of the pack was the runner-up in the past two Musto Skiff World Championships, Rob Richardson from Royal Windermere Yacht Club. "It was a good fun event," said Richardson. "Really nice just to get out racing, and loads of boats on the water which was good to see, just like the events in the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series."

Closest competitor to Richardson was fellow Musto Skiff sailor Euan Hurter from Dalgety Bay Sailing Club, which will be the host club of the fourth and final event in the Sailjuice Challenge at the end of this month, the Dalgety Challenge.

In third overall were James and Rory Gifford from Royal Tay Yacht Club hiking their RS200 around the course. Rohan O'Kane from Clyde Cruising Club Dinghy Section also did well in his Topper, finishing in sixth place behind the front group of Musto Skiffs. Top multihull was local Loch Lomond sailor Alan Moss's Shadow X in 12th overall, followed in 13th place by the top sportsboat, a VX One of Tony Lewis and Andrew Cutting from Ullswater Yacht Club.

What is the Magic Marine Sailjuice Challenge?

Following on from 16 successful seasons of the Selden Sailjuice Winter Series, the aim of the Magic Marine Sailjuice Challenge is to provide good handicap racing across a series throughout the year, including the busy summer months.

The organisers of the Magic Marine Sailjuice Challenge are working with existing events to help bring additional publicity and increase participation.

More events are planned for the Sailjuice Challenge in 2026. For further information about how to get involved, either as a participating Class or a host Sailing Club, please contact Simon Lovesey at
