12 Metre North American Championship brings world-class racing to Narragansett Bay

by International 12 Metre Association 12 Aug 20:04 BST September 19-21, 2025

The elegance of classic yachting returns to Narragansett Bay this fall as the 2025 12 Metre North American Championship comes to Newport from September 19-21, hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club in partnership with the International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) Americas Fleet.

This prestigious regatta brings together one of the most celebrated fleets in sailing history—iconic 12 Metre yachts that once ruled the America's Cup—against the backdrop of Newport's historic waterfront and vibrant sailing culture. Competing in Traditional and Classic divisions, the 12 Metres continue a proud tradition of excellence and craftsmanship on the water.

"There's nothing else like it," said Jack LeFort, owner of Challenge XII. "The 12 Metre Class isn't just beautiful—it offers world-class competition and programs. These boats are competitive, demanding, and steeped in history. Newport is the perfect place to race these boats."

Spectators will enjoy prime vantage points at Fort Adams, Castle Hill, and bustling Bannister's Wharf, where these floating masterpieces will be docked between races. On shore, the scene is as dynamic as the competition—offering fans and photographers rare access to these legendary yachts.

The 2025 North American Championship also marks the kickoff of a historic two-year series of elite racing events in Newport, including:

  • 12 Metre Pre-Worlds - July 31-August 1, 2026
  • 12 Metre World Championship - August 5-9, 2026

Each event will draw top teams from around the world, offering dockside hospitality, fierce competition, and international fanfare.

"The 12s are unlike any other boats," adds Jephtha Tausig, VP, 12mR Americas Fleet. "They are a part of international sailing history. The 12 Metre class competed in the America's Cup for 29 years—the longest period of any class in that race. There's a finite number of them in the world, so it's a privilege to sail one. They're graceful, elegant thoroughbreds built to race—and you feel that every time you're on board."
