Last week saw a record-breaking event as 237 Waszps from across the globe descended on WPNSA to battle it out for world titles at the 2025 Waszp Games.

Among the international swarm were four talented Welsh sailors: Ellie Creighton, Chris Keatley, and Rhys Lewis from Cardiff Bay Yacht Club (CBYC), and Flo Tovey from Mumbles Sailing Club.

The regatta kicked off with two days of qualifying, splitting sailors into three flights. The fleets were met with big breeze over 20 knots, and for those in yellow fleet being sent far out the harbour, including Chris and Rhys, conditions quickly intensified, with gusts touching 30 knots and 1m waves over tide.

Chris faced damage on both days, managing just two out of eight finishes, while Rhys delivered an outstanding performance in the challenging conditions, finishing all races and earning a well-deserved spot in the fully-loaded Silver Fleet.

Over in the harbour Flo sailed impressively in the 8.2 rig, handling the heavy air with determination and securing a solid mid-fleet Bronze fleet qualification.

Ellie, sailing the 6.9 rig at her first ever Waszp event, made huge strides in the Green Fleet, winning two of her races. Her efforts were rewarded with a promotion to the main 6.9 fleet for the final days of racing a fantastic achievement.

As the breeze moderated to 10-15 knots for the final three days, racing conditions became more tactical. Chris and Flo enjoyed some intense racing in the Bronze Fleet of 70 boats, while Rhys had standout moments in Silver, including a top-20 finish a personal highlight.

All four sailors agreed that it was an unforgettable experience, showcasing an incredible standard of competition not seen before at a Waszp event.
