Dedicated volunteer and former Peterhead Sailing Club Commodore Martin Thain has been recognised with an RYA Scotland Impact Award, celebrating his remarkable contribution to youth development and wider club activities at Peterhead over many years.

The award was presented by Rhys Gorman, Regional Development Officer for RYA Scotland, in the lead-up to this year's early season in acknowledgement of Martin's tireless efforts and the momentum he's helped build over the previous four years as Commodore.

RYA Scotland Impact Awards are designed to highlight and celebrate individuals and projects making a meaningful difference within the sailing and boating community across Scotland.

From growing participation to strengthening community ties, these awards shine a light on people who go above and beyond to create positive change - with Martin's story exemplifying this ethos perfectly.

Faced with a potential drop in engagement from a group of keen local young sailors during the quiet winter months, Martin responded with vision and determination, launching a weekly 'Monday Club' that has since grown into a much loved programme at Peterhead.

Martin brought together a dedicated group of volunteers, keeping them inspired with fresh, hands on activities that kept the young sailors engaged week after week. From unique challenges to creative learning opportunities, the sessions offered far more than just a way to pass the time - they built community, confidence, and connection.

What drives Martin isn't the accolades, it's the visible impact on the young people involved. He's motivated by the smiles and skills which come from these sessions, with Peterhead Sailing Club now a stellar example of year round youth engagement.

One of the clearest examples of Martin's lasting influence can be seen in the journey of current Peterhead Commodore Jack Walls.

Jack first joined Peterhead Sailing Club at just 11 years old, and with thanks in large part to Martin's guidance and support, Jack grew into a confident sailor and young leader.

Earlier this year, at just 18 years old, Jack became club commodore - a remarkable achievement that reflects both his dedication and the strong foundation Martin helped build.

Jack's story is a powerful reminder of how meaningful mentorship can shape futures, and of the quiet but profound impact Martin continues to have on those around him.

This RYA Scotland Impact Award celebrates not only what Martin has achieved so far, but the lasting legacy he's creating for young sailors in the northeast and beyond.
