Last weekend, 12-13 July, the Royal Southern Yacht Club hosted the third event in our flagship Summer Series - the Salcombe Gin July Regatta.

The weekend saw some fantastic conditions - sunshine and wind of up to 15 knots from the southeast. Four classes competed across two groups.

In Black Group, there were three IRC classes. The IRC 1 fleet was particularly strong with 10 boats ranging from a Fareast 28R to a GP42. In the end it was a battle of the J/Boats with James Chalmers taking victory of his J/112E 'Happy Daize' recording an impressive four bullets from six races, including a clean sweep on day two. Tony Mack and his team on 'McFly' took second overall in IRC 1 as well as victory in the J/111 sub-class.

In IRC 2, 'Thunderbault' owned by Julian James sailed a dominant series to win overall with a race to spare, beating the J/99 'Jump 2 it' of Kevin Taylor. Edward Mockridge's JPK1010 'Elaine Again' was just one point further back in third.

It was very close at the top in IRC 3 with Ian Handley's 'Banter' team equal on points but winning on count back from James Crew on 'Quokka'. Sam Cox's 'Liquidity Risk' were right in the mix too.

There was a bit of a change in White Group for this regatta - with the J/70s away racing with the Royal Yacht Squadron, and the SB20s down in Weymouth for their Nationals, we instead were joined by the Etchells class for this event.

As competitive as always, the Greig City Academy team sailed an impressive event to win overall, from 'Tango' Chris Hampton in second, and Johnny Cooper on 'Man's Best Friend' in third.

On the shore, competitors were treated to complementary Salcombe Gin on Saturday evening courtesy of our very generous title sponsor - plus some live music by the brilliant 'Still-Moving DJs'. On Sunday there was yet more Salcombe Gin for the prize winners.

After a break in August, our next, and final, event in the Summer Series 2025 will be the September Regatta on 19-21 September - which will incorporate the inaugural Performance 30 UK National Championships.
