Trelly's Weekly Fishing Report - July 11, 2025

Hey You... You're reading a fishing report compiled and written by Robbie Alexander. Overall the fishing has been quite slow for most species in most areas recently, however the dedicated anglers have been rewarded for their winter fishing efforts.

Goulburn River

The Goulburn River has been fishing quite slow around the Shepparton area. I have seen a couple of photos of carp caught in the river but that's about it.

On the other hand, the crayfish have been biting well with many keen cray fisherman catching their bag limit with no shortage or undersized, oversized and berried crayfish being released.

If you are heading to the Goulburn River in the near future, don't forget your cray nets.

Waranga Basin

The Waranga Basin has been fishing quite slowly. I filmed a video for my YouTube channel over there recently where I fished for a few hours with worms and lures and managed to catch just 1 tiny redfin right in the dark.

My redfin was caught on a Strike Tiger Nymph soft plastic with the claws removed.

In the comments section of my video, a number of people commented stating that they also had fished the basin with no luck.

The good news is that over the last few years I have caught quite a few redfin just casting soft plastics from the bank towards the end of winter as the Waranga Basin fills, so I expect the fishing to improve there soon.

Lake Neangar And Crusoe Reservoir

The Victorian Fisheries Authority have just stocked heaps of rainbow trout into both Lake Neangar and Crusoe Reservoir in Bendigo for the school holidays.

I have seen photos popping up on social media of young people catching trout in both lakes which is great. I have also seen a couple of photos of Silver Perch that have been caught in Lake Neangar which is quite impressive for this cold time of the year.

Lake Eildon

Lake Eildon has been fishing well for the enormous Murray cod that it is known for. While social media might give the illusion that these fish are easy to catch... they're not.

These people are seriously hardcore. Standing in a boat, wearing layers of clothing in the middle of a frosty night casting huge lures to try and catch a Murray cod.

Many are using live scope sonar these days, while others refuse to adapt to the new technology. And then there's me, sitting on the bank at Lake Eildon drowning worms. As un-technical and relaxing as it gets.

I fished Kookaburra Point last week. I sat on the bank, fishing with worms. I caught 2 small redfin, 1 roach and a carp. Best of all, I was at home with my grandpa slippers on during the cold night air.

Ovens River

The Ovens River has been very slow. My Friend Sonny has been catching a Murray cod here and there. Never have I known a more dedicated angler than Sonny. He has worked so hard for the small number of cod that he has caught.

I have been bait fishing the ovens with worms with quite good success. I have been catching a lot of carp, with a few sneaky yellowbelly also turning up to my delight.

Again, it is winter. It hasn't been red hot fishing, but any fish is a good fish in the depths of winter in Victoria.

Now, totally unrelated to fishing: I bought a world map and a dart. I told my wife to throw the dart at the map and wherever it hits, that's where we are going on holidays.

It looks like we're spending the next 2 weeks behind the fridge!

Happy Fishing to you all...
