Streaker Coastal Championship at Broadstairs Sailing Club

by Dave Adams 28 Jun 07:41 BST 21-22 June 2025

The thriving Streaker fleet arrived at the Kent coast for their first visit to Broadstairs Sailing Club. The Streaker Coastal Championship was the third event in the 2025 Rooster Super Series and also part of the North Sails Southern Paddle Series.

Saturday, the morning of the hot summer solstice, began with Broadstairs club members greeting the arriving sailors. A record fleet of competitors for the Coastal Championships rigged their boats whilst waiting for the forecast winds to arrive. The sailors were held ashore while Race Officer Doug Spooner and his team attempted to set a course. After several hours the day's racing was abandoned and everyone retired to the club for tea and homemade cakes! The evening saw a packed clubhouse being fed with a freshly cooked meal prepared by the volunteers in the galley.

The fleet awoke on Sunday to thunderstorms which quickly blew over leaving a light offshore breeze. Doug and his team set a near perfect start line and windward mark, allowing for the tide. Race 1 started on time. Local boat, Dave Adams, broke away at the committee boat end and sailed the first shifty beat to round the windward mark, closely followed by Neil Firth (Banbury SC). A big windshift halfway through saw Dave pull away and Neil maintain his position, followed at the finish by Lee Goodey (Broadstairs SC).

The wind continued to shift but Doug and team quickly reset the whole course to get the second race away in a building breeze. Dave broke clear at the start, followed this time by Lee who briefly took the lead on the second beat to then get stuck on the wrong side of a shift! New to the fleet Duncan Glen (Spinnaker SC), in his recently purchased Butler boat 1930, took advantage of Lee's bad luck, finishing second with Neil in third.

More work for Doug and team to reset the course once again. The start of race 3 was in sequence when the wind shifted significantly in the final minute. Simon Cory (Downs SC) was lining up for a massive port flyer but Doug was having none of it; start abandoned! With the line reset, the start got away cleanly with Dave rounding first, closely followed by Ian Morgan (Warsash SC). The two battled for the whole race, seeing Ian take the lead on the last run and winning by half a boat length. Chris Lewns (Broadstairs SC) sailed a steady race to finish in third.

Race 4 of the day saw the breeze build and settle to a more southerly direction. With a change of tide and the sea state building the fleet was treated to sea sailing, possibly at its best. Lee got away at the start followed closely by Chris. Dave rounded third with Ian a close fourth. Lee maintained his lead to the finish with the others battling it out with fast reaches and a run to challenge all. Ian pulled through to second and Dave narrowly took third from Chris.

A great day was had by all, finishing with champagne sailing and lots of happy people. Huge thanks go to the on-the-water team in challenging conditions, the Beach Master Ali Barnet (with permission from Stan), the beach crew, the galley and bar teams, without whom these events are not possible.
