Hansa Class UK National Championships 2025 at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy

by David Durston 21 Jun 19:24 BST 13-15 June 2025

The event was held at the iconic Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, a fitting venue to decide the 2025 National Champions for each of the four Hansa classes.

Sally Renoldson of the Academy and her team put together a fantastic event which was sponsored by Halls property lawyers. Chesil Sailability volunteers provided an incredible amount of support across the weekend to make it all possible. Paul Kimmens kindly headed up the Race team to provide a high level of professionalism in decision making and course setting. The safety team was headed up by Brett Cokayne of the RYA, and proved to be in huge demand as sailors battled with boat breaking conditions.

The first day of the event was supposed to be two races in the afternoon. All the boats launched and went to the race area, only to find some frustrating holes on the course.

Wind speeds ranged from 2 to 6 kn, but the upper end didn't stay for long enough to warrant making a start. Mid-afternoon it was decided to abandon racing for the day. In the evening all involved enjoyed a barbecue, followed by a fun quiz with Nicky Durston acting as quiz master.

Day two couldn't have been more different. There was heavy chop and wind speeds ranged from 14 kn to 22 kn. All classes did two races in the morning and three in the afternoon to catch up with the scheduled eight races for the event. Several sailors found the conditions too tough and decided not to race in the afternoon.

At the end of the day, Mike Everitt was leading the liberty fleet on nett 5, David Durston in 2nd on nett 7, and Paul Phillips the current European champion in 3rd place on nett 11. Competition between the top 4 was fierce, with a few boat lengths often separating them all.

In the 303 single fleet, Rory McKinna achieved 5 bullets, Toby Owen had 4 2nds, and Margarette Foreman had 4 3rds. In the 2-person fleet, Stuart and Lynne Swan retired from the first race and then found their form to take 3 1sts and a 2nd, ahead of 2 of the teams who we welcomed from Oman, Ali and Sam second, and Hassan and Adil in third.

In the 2.3 class all of the day's races finished, Lindsay Burns, Rowena Marsh, followed by Andrew Lebec.

Everybody was exhausted after battling with the waves, so we had a brief AGM followed by a nice dinner before people left to prepare for the next day.

On the Sunday, the winds dropped slightly and the sea state was calmer, which led to champagne Sailing conditions for the final day of competition. The race team managed to fit in three races so the full quota of eight was achieved. As it happened, there were no changes to the positions after day two.

Paul Kimmens led the prize-giving and awarded the Endeavour award to Andrew Lebec who persevered through Saturday's conditions in his Hansa 2.3.

The Hansa class try to develop our sailors and both Brett Cokayne and Chris Hargreaves who were part of the safety team were also acting as coaches. The following week we had a debrief through video conferencing so that people could learn how to improve for the future.
