Largs Sailing Club held the reintroduction of its long-anticipated Club Championships over the weekend of 31st May/1st June, proudly sponsored by Splashmaps.
With a packed schedule, varied race formats, challenging conditions and a vibrant social atmosphere, the championships drew strong participation and enthusiasm from members across the club.
Saturday - Windy and Wild
Saturday saw the completion of three competitive races in blustery conditions, with gusts reaching 25 knots. The testing breeze made for exhilarating sailing, demanding sharp boat handling and tactical awareness across both the fast and slow handicap fleets.
Despite the challenging conditions, racing was tight throughout the day, with sailors battling shifting wind angles and steep chop. The race committee did an excellent job keeping the schedule on track and setting fair courses that tested skill and stamina.
Sunday - Tired Legs and a Fitting Tribute
Sunday opened with a short windward-leeward sprint race, keeping crews on their toes in again blustery conditions. Following this, the breeze built to a solid 20 knots and the fleet took part in an orienteering-style race held in memory of much-loved club member Storky. This celebrated both fast paced racing and local knowledge, bringing a fitting and memorable close to the regatta.
Championship Winners
Congratulations to Carol and Phil Alderson in the Cherub, who were crowned winners of the Fast Handicap Class and took home the Overall Club Championship Pollock Trophy for their consistency and excellent boat handling across all races.
In the Slow Handicap Class, Cameron McDaid emerged victorious in his ILCA6, also taking the overall win in the long memorial race for Storky, a heartfelt tribute that resonated across the fleet.
Social & Thanks
The weekend was well-attended and marked a vibrant return for the Club Championships. Saturday night's social, featuring delicious pizzas delivered from the Courtyard Bistro, was a hit with sailors and volunteers alike, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and relive the day's action.
A huge thank you goes out to the race committee, safety boat teams, bar staff, and all the volunteers who made the weekend run so smoothly. Special thanks to our generous sponsor Splashmaps which are available for purchase online and locally at Largs Chandlers.
We look forward to seeing everyone back on the water soon - and here's to an even bigger Club Championships in 2026!
