Streaker HD Sails Northern Paddle Series at Hykeham Sailing Club

by Neil Dyer 3 Jun 06:51 BST 31 May 2025

A sunny day, a gusty force 2-3 and blue waters greeted four home boats and seven visitors to Hykeham Sailing Club's Streaker open meeting, the second event in the 2025 HD Sails Northern Paddle Series.

Martin Penty (Beaver SC) led the first race after starting from the pin end. He was closely pursued by Alan Bishop (Girton SC) and Nigel Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC). Neil Dyer (Hykeham SC) cleverly positioned his boat in the mud at the first gybe mark, which enabled him to watch Martin extend his lead for an easy win! Alan finished second and Nigel was third.

Race two got away after lunch. Ian Bradley (Ouse Amateur SC) led at the first mark, a lead which he held for two laps, only to be overtaken by Martin and Alan who were both having an excellent day. The two short runs on the course meant the reaches were tight enough for planing, while the runs allowed frequent place changing. Martin crossed the line first, with Alan second and Ian third.

The final race was just as tight with Martin and Alan taking the first two places once again. However, Dave Borrett (Beaver SC) showed good boat speed to claim third place.

So, the overall winner was Martin Penty (Beaver SC), with Alan Bishop (Girton SC) in second. Nigel Pepperdine (Staunton Harold SC) took third on countback.

Many thanks to all the club volunteers who gave up their time to put on the event, the stand out being the home-made sandwiches for lunch!
