A powerful new campaign designed to capture the world's emotional connection to the ocean is being launched today ahead of the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France in June.
The Ocean's Logbook is an interactive digital survey that looks beyond cold statistics to capture real stories, listening to people's voices and feelings, as they share their experiences living in a world impacted by declining ocean health.
By sharing these human perspectives, The Ocean's Logbook will highlight our changing relationship with the sea. Its insights will fill a void in understanding public sentiment and empower global policymakers to act with a deeper awareness of the values and concerns of the people they represent.
Through the use of a short, engaging online survey, The Ocean's Logbook invites people everywhere to share what the ocean means to them - and why ocean health initiatives need to move forward immediately.
The campaign is the result of a collaboration between The Ocean Race, the offshore sailing event often described as the toughest test of a team in sport, and the award-winning design and innovation company, AKQA.
The Ocean's Logbook will create a living, breathing archive of human connection to the sea that speaks louder than any individual data point.
In two weeks, an initial snapshot of the survey results will be mapped, synthesized and shared with leaders at UNOC3 offering a uniquely human perspective on ocean issues. But The Ocean's Logbook campaign is designed to run much longer and reach further, building a wave of testimony from diverse voices in support of the 30x30 commitment to protect at least 30 percent of the ocean by 2030 (see more here).
"The health of the ocean is at an inflection point and we need policymakers to understand that their constituents want to see them taking positive action and living up to the commitments already made through the 30x30 targets," said Peter Thomson, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean. "With The Ocean's Logbook, we have an opportunity to bring the voices of the people to life and push for meaningful action."
Sam Andrews, Executive Experience Director at AKQA, said: "Partnering with The Ocean Race on The Ocean's Logbook campaign has been a powerful reminder of how storytelling and data can unite to drive awareness and action. AKQA developed the creative concept, defined the survey mechanics, crafted the campaign message, and brought it to life. We believe design can shift perspectives, and this collaboration is a step toward securing recognition, rights, and protection for one of our planet's most vital ecosystems."
Richard Brisius, the Chairman of The Ocean Race said: "As we look ahead to UNOC3 and beyond, it is clear that our leaders are not moving fast enough to meet their 30x30 commitments towards ocean protection. The Ocean's Logbook is a way to gauge and amplify public sentiment and remind those in charge that 30x30 is not just a target, but a promise that needs to be kept if we are to protect the ocean, and our shared future on this blue planet."

The Ocean's Logbook:
- We live in a world of numbers.
- 90% of fish stocks depleted. Five consecutive years of record heat. Saving 30% of the ocean by 2030.
- The numbers are there, but they don't stir the heart. They don't make us act.
- Because you don't protect a percentage. You protect what you love. What you remember. What you fear losing.
- That's why we made The Ocean's Logbook: A living, breathing archive of human connection to the sea.
- Together, they speak louder than any data point. Mapped, synthesized, and carried to the UN Ocean Conference, this wave of testimony demands attention.
- Not as an abstract goal, but as a shared reality.
- Until 30% by 2030 is not just a target, but a promise kept.
