29er GP5 at Warsash Sailing Club

by 29er Class Association 25 Mar 2025 06:17 GMT 22-23 March 2025

The 29er GP5 took place over the weekend of March 22nd-23rd, 2025, at the prestigious Warsash Sailing Club. It was a competitive event that saw varied conditions and tactical racing, especially on Sunday.

Saturday's conditions were moderate, with winds between 10-12 knots and overcast skies. The fleet launched in a steady breeze, and began the sail out to the race course.

Race 1 started with a good breeze, and the fleet was off to a great start. Throughout the race, the lead changed several times, but in the end, Jac and Ben took the win comfortably, after extending hugely from the rest of the fleet on the second upwind beat.

In Race 2, the conditions were almost identical. Andrew and Roo came of the Pin end and showed great pace and were leading at the top mark. Their speed in the downwinds helped them to maintain their lead and take the bullet! The rest of the fleet fought hard, but no one was able to challenge the winners.

Race 3 followed quickly after, with the wind remaining steady at around 10-12 knots. Dylan and Tristan won the pin end of the start this time and showed excellent boatspeed to claim the win. Their consistent upwind speed helped them extend their lead in the latter half of the race.

Race 4: The final race of the day saw Lila and Amelie emerge victorious, delivering a great performance. Their ability to stay ahead of the pack in both the upwind and downwind legs made the difference, and they secured the win by a solid margin.

By the end of Saturday, the fleet had completed four races, with Jac and Ben holding the overall lead after consistent performances in all four races. Although racing had ended for the day, the fun didn't stop. The planned Beach party social saw sailors dress up in Haiwaan/summer themed shirts and indulged in the most delicious barbecue and listened to some great music!! Fun was had by all!

Sunday brought lighter conditions, with winds only reaching 5-8 knots and overcast skies continuing to dominate the day. After a short AP, Delta was raised and the race committee worked hard to get racing under way, as the wind appeared to be dying off rapidly.

The fleet was launched for the first race, but with the wind dropping, it became a race against time to get some more results on the board. Fortunately, the committee managed to get two races in before the wind completely died.

Race 5 was the first to get under way on Sunday, with everyone hoping to get one last opportunity to make a move in the standings. The wind remained light, and the race became a test of endurance and patience. Dirk and Will showed great skill in the light winds and managed to secure the win after overtaking Eliana and Ed in the second Upwind.

Race 6 followed shortly after, and once again the light conditions and shifty conditions forced sailors to keep their eyes out of the boat, with lots of right shifts, especially on the second upwind Oliver and Angus took the race win.

With the six races completed, the overall results were determined, with the ever consistent pairing of Jac and Ben maintaining their lead from Saturday to win the event. They were closely followed by Lila and Amelie, with Dylan and Tristan finishing third. The results were tight, and the light winds on Sunday meant that every race counted.

As always a huge thanks to the race committee, volunteers, and organisers at Warsash Sailing Club for their dedication and hard work to make events like these possible, and a massive thanks to Allen for sponsoring the event. Hopefully, we'll see stronger winds and even more exciting racing in the next event, which is the British Youth National Championships, being held in Pwllheli in only a couple of weeks!
