The 420 and 470 classes gathered at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for an exciting Winter Championships on February 8-9, 2025. The competition, which saw a strong turnout of 28 entries in the 420 class and five in the 470 class, showcased impressive sailing with wintery conditions providing a true test of skill and endurance.

In the 420 class, the competition was close and this first event of the 2025 calendar saw established and new pairings battle it out on the waters of Portland Harbour. Among the standout performances were new pairing Bea and Zac, who quickly made their mark, showing impressive teamwork and tactics. Their efforts were rewarded with an excellent overall performance, which will surely set the tone for future events. Another impressive pair were Edie and Isobel, who have been rising through the fleet - they claimed the title of First Under 17's.

When the final race results were tallied, Will and Matthew claimed the top spot in the 420 class with a net score of 8 points, a well-deserved result after some close-fought races. In second-place and first females were Sabine Potter and Merle Nieuwland who showed great consistency, with Joe and Hennie taking third.

In a new format, the 470 class also ran races alongside the 420's, giving opportunities for those sailors with an eye on the Olympics to hone their skills. Haydn and Oscar took first place with a string of bullets, from second place Hazel and Oliver.

Thanks to Race Officer Jonathan Milton, working alongside the experienced 'Arky', who ensured smooth and professional race management across all fleets. They were ably assisted by Course Safety Lead, Craig Burlton and many other volunteers who set true championship courses and reassuring safety in the stiff and biting north easterly breeze.

On the Saturday night the classes gathered for a Sailor and Families Supper - a great opportunity for some socialising off the water, and for those new to the class to be welcomed into the community. The highlight of this evening was a talk from John Hibbard, the CEO of Gill, who announced the new partnership between Gill and the 420's. John talked from his personal experience as a windsurfer and entrepreneur, and emphasised the importance of fostering young talent in sailing.

His insight into the company's commitment to the sport resonated with everyone present, and the sailors were keen to discuss what makes 'exceptional sailing kit' with him afterwards. The class are very grateful to Gill for their sponsorship, and also long-term sponsor Xtremity for their ongoing commitment to the 420's.

The Winter Championships at WPNSA demonstrated the strength of British youth sailing, with talented sailors in both the 420 and 470 classes showcasing their potential.

Next up is the Gill Xtremity Inland Champs at Rutland on the 15th/16th March.

A full training schedule is also available for established teams, new pairings or individuals - do get in touch if you are interested - see gbr420.uk/events/events-calendar
