Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team completes final training session ahead of the 44Cup Nanny Cay

The Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team successfully completed its final training session before the official start of the 44Cup Nanny Cay, the opening event of the 2025 season in the prestigious RC44 international circuit.
It was an intense day on the water, filled with well-executed manoeuvres and an unexpected setback, a tear in the gennaker. Despite this, the team reacted swiftly and effectively, ensuring they continued their preparation as planned.
Even with this challenge the crew demonstrated their ability to adapt and respond, delivering one of the best starts in the first test race of the day. These training sessions have been crucial for fine-tuning teamwork and solidifying the integration of new crew members. With six of the nine sailors hailing from Lanzarote, the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team approaches this challenge with determination, aiming to establish itself among the top competitors in the class.
A special tribute to Matteo Auguadro
The 44Cup community came together to pay tribute to Matteo Auguadro, a valued sailor and key figure in the class, whose legacy remains deeply felt. In his honour all teams will fly a black ribbon on their mainsails throughout the competition. Additionally, an initiative has been launched to support his daughters' education and future, reflecting the strong camaraderie and solidarity within the fleet.
Thursday 13 February - Racing cancelled on Day 1: 44Cup Nanny Cay
Unfortunately on the opening day the easterly trade winds proved too much. With 25 knots considered the maximum in which the nimble RC44 one designs can race, the wind strength hovered around 25-26 knots for the entire time the race committee boat was on station out in the St Francis Drake Channel. However the onset of a front, bringing with it 35+ knot winds, was too much and at 1300 local time the race committee from the Royal BVI Yacht Club and the 44Cup's PRO Maria Torrijo made the tough decision to hoist the AP over A flag and cancel racing for the day.
This first event of the year was to feature nine teams, including defending champions Team Nika, alongside strong contenders such as Team Ceeref Vaider, Aleph Racing, and Team Aqua.
For the Lanzarote Calero Sailing Team, this event is a key milestone following their partial participation in last season's circuit. With a strengthened line-up and fresh talent from Lanzarote, the team has drawn attention, and expectations for their performance is high. As the event organisers noted: "It's fantastic to see the fleet expanding with new teams. The newcomers have already shown impressive form in training, which will add even more competitiveness to the class."
Racing is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday 14 February) at 1100 local time, after today's cancellation.
