Xtremity 420 Autumn Championship at Warsash Sailing Club

by David Fletcher 17 Oct 2024 14:32 BST 28-29 September 2024

The waters off Warsash Sailing Club came alive as 24 teams showcased their talents during the highly anticipated Xtremity 420 Autumn Championship held on September 28th and 29th. Amidst challenging weather conditions, sailors demonstrated exceptional skill and adaptability across six exhilarating races.

Saturday kicked off with a light northerly breeze that tested competitors to their limits. The shifting winds made strategy crucial, and the Race Officer made the strategic choice to maximize the schedule, completing four races before an expected strong wind hit on Sunday.

Sunday's racing brought the anticipated excitement with winds clocking in at nearly 30 knots! The fierce southerly set the stage for an adrenaline-fueled experience, challenging even the most seasoned sailors. Despite the tough conditions, the Race Officer expertly coordinated the races, allowing for two thrilling races.

Claiming the top spot was the duo of William Fletcher and Matthew Rayner from the Royal Southern Yacht Club/Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club. Close behind were the talented pair of Harry George and Ralph Cawthorne from Lymington Town Sailing Club/Shustoke SC, securing second place thanks to a series of consistent performances. Rounding out the podium were Joe Jones and Hennie Burlton of Burghfield SC/Royal Southern YC, showcasing their skills to finish in third.

The event not only highlighted remarkable sailing talent but also celebrated diversity within the 420 class, featuring a range of entries including Under-17, mixed, male, and female teams. With an impressive gender balance, the competition provided an inspiring environment for all participants, underscoring the strength and inclusivity of the sport.

Warsash Sailing Club, renowned for hosting premier sailing events, proved yet again to be an exceptional venue. The championship served as a valuable opportunity for sailors to fine-tune their skills and gain essential racing experience, paving the way for upcoming national and international competitions.
