Wetsuit Outlet International Moth UK Championship at Restronguet Sailing Club - Day 3

by Mark Jardine for IMCAUK 13 Jul 2024 18:26 BST 11-14 July 2024

Moth sailing is without a doubt one of the most exhilarating ways you can enjoy your time on the water, but it can be frustrating sometimes.

Every racing sailor is familiar with waiting ashore for the breeze, but Moths require around 6 knots to get up foiling, so the threshold to get racing can be slightly higher than some classes.

Day 3 of the Wetsuit Outlet International Moth UK Championship resulted in a long wait ashore while David Campbell-James and the dedicated team of volunteers from Restronguet Sailing Club went afloat, took wind readings, and hoped that the wind would build.

Optimism was high at 2pm when the anemometers hit 10 knots, so the fleet was released from the shore, with all quickly getting up on to the foils, entertaining the many cruising yachts and pleasure boats who were out on the Carrick Roads enjoying a leisurely Saturday afternoon, as well as the Falmouth Workboats who were racing in the light wind.

This moment of breeze was all too brief, and despite the race team starting the sequence for a race, it became obvious that it wasn't going to go ahead as not a single Moth was foiling and the anemometers were spinning feebly.

The sailors were sent back ashore, and not long after N over A was hoisted to signal that racing was abandoned for the day.

Tonight sees the class AGM, followed by a barbecue at the club which will lift the mood of those who were looking forward to another day of great racing at this superb venue. Fingers crossed we can finish the event on a high note on Sunday.

IMCA UK would like to say a massive thank-you to the event and class sponsors:
