Queen Adelaide and Tamesis Anchor at Tamesis Club

by Alastair Banks 11 Jun 06:36 BST 8 June 2024

Tamesis Club hosted the internal only Queen Adelaide and Tamesis Anchor for National 18s on Saturday 8th June 2024.

Owing to variety of factors, several usual 18 helms and boats were unavailable for this event. Nonetheless, three Ultimate 18s in the form of Zephyr (374), Snowgoose (369), and Antedote (348) turned out to do battle. With no discards, all three races were to count.

Matthew Dalton, OOD for the day, set a dog-leg course which included a long run, or what was supposed to be, down to the Lensbury mark. As many at Tamesis know, then wind often changes direction rapidly and so it proved to be the case. At points, runs turned into beats.

Race 1 saw Antedote take an early lead for the first two laps before being caught by Zephyr and Snowgoose. As is the way at Tamesis, the wind died at the wrong moment for Antedote, allowing for Zephyr and Snowgoose to catch up and shoot away. A close running battle was had between Zephyr and Snowgoose for the remainder of the race, but Zephyr came out on top to take line honours.

The top mark was brought closer to the clubhouse for the second race which saw another close affair again between all three boats, with the lead changing throughout the race. However, Zephyr proved triumphant again to take her second bullet.

A close affair was also had in the final race with all three boats finishing within seconds of each other. Zephyr managed to hold on and secure a final bullet to take a home a clean sweep of three firsts, and thereby securing both the Queen Adelaide and Tamesis Anchor.
