Musto Lark National Championships 2024 at Weymouth Sailing Club - Day 2

by Stuart Hydon 27 May 2024 19:26 BST 26-29 May 2024

Glorious sunshine with a brisk breeze, plus a bit more!

Race 3 started with a gate start, Nigel Hufton/Matt Wood followed by Stuart and Nick Hydon went early hitting the left-hand side. When it was time to tack, they picked up a great shift, easily clearing the rest of the fleet. The Hydons overhauled Hufton & Wood on the reach and held the position to the finish. What should have been an easy second for Hufton & Wood ended with a capsize at the last leg after a gybe went wrong. This allowed Gillard & Hobson into second and Chris & Kate Holliman into third.

Race 4 was a line start with a number of recalls. Gillard & Hobson led the race with Simon and George Cox sliding past on the first reach, but this was short lived as Gillard/Hobson retook the lead. Tim Fells and Fran Gifford moved into second place with Simon and George making a third.

Race 5 saw the wind building to F5/6 resulting in a reduced number of boats starting. Gillard/Hobson rounded first and established a good lead as Megan Brickwood & Connor Dickson struggled with their kite hoist. This allowed Fells/Gifford to move up to second ahead of Hufton & Wood.

In summary, the results are looks promising for Tom Gillard and James Hobson, meanwhile there's a real fight for second position onwards. Yesterday's 2nd place overall Chris and Nic White slipped to 9th having broken a boom during race 3 and losing two races as a result.
